Maker's Mark cutting alcohol volume in its bourbon

(AP) ? The producer of Maker's Mark bourbon is cutting ? likely permanently ? the amount of alcohol in each bottle to stretch every drop of the famous Kentucky whiskey. The alcohol volume is being lowered from its historic level of 45 percent to 42 percent ? or 90 proof to 84 proof.

The brand known for its square bottles sealed in red wax has struggled to keep up with demand that more than doubled the past seven years. Distribution has been squeezed and the popular premium brand has had to curtail shipments to some overseas markets.

"Over the last 100-plus days, there are many, many instances across lot of different cities where bars, restaurants, package stores have run low, run out," Rob Samuels, chief operating officer for Maker's Mark and grandson of the brand's founder, said Monday.

"Given the surge in demand outstripping supply, what we've decided to do very carefully is to slightly reduce the alcohol volume."

The recipe and production process will stay the same, except "a touch more water" will be added when the whiskey comes out of the barrel for bottling, Samuels said. The brand's bourbon is made at its distillery near the small town of Loretto, 45 miles south of Louisville.

Water is typically added before whiskey goes into the barrel for aging and after bourbon comes out for bottling, he said.

It's the first time the bourbon brand, more than a half-century old, has altered its proof or alcohol volume.

The lower alcohol volume is seen as permanent and will increase available volume by about 6 percent, Samuels said.

The change was done only after extensive testing showed it didn't alter the taste of Maker's Mark, he said.

"Paramount in our decision was ensuring the taste standard is exactly the same," Samuels said.

His father, Bill Samuels Jr., chairman emeritus of the brand started by his parents, said he thought his father would approve.

"He never really was wed to 90 proof anyway," the elder Samuels said. "It's just that he had to pick something, and he knew that anything over 90, the alcohol smothered the taste of whiskey and he was a little nervous about going too much lower."

Chuck Cowdery, an American whiskey writer and author of "Bourbon, Straight," said "time will tell" how the change sits with the brand's legions of devoted fans in an industry that clings tightly to tradition.

"They're banking that this won't be a deal-breaker with their consumers, that there will be a hew and cry for a few days, but sales won't miss a beat," he said in an email. "Are they right? Maker's is in many ways unique, so it's hard to say."

Maker's Mark is owned by spirits company Beam Inc., based in Deerfield, Ill. Its other brands include Jim Beam bourbon.

The supply shortage at Maker's Mark comes amid an ongoing expansion of its operations that has cost tens of millions of dollars.

A distillery expansion completed last year boosted production capacity by 45 percent, Rob Samuels said. Maker's last year added warehouse space for 100,000 more barrels of aging bourbon, and it expects that expansion pace to continue for at least another five years.

Maker's bourbon ages in barrels for at least six summers and no longer than seven years before bottling.

One shortcut the bourbon maker refuses to accept, Rob Samuels said, is trimming the aging process, which would increase market supplies. It also won't buy surplus whiskey from other distilleries, he said.

The supply shortage at Maker's comes amid growing demand for Kentucky bourbons in general.

Combined Kentucky bourbon and Tennessee whiskey sales from producers or suppliers to wholesalers rose 5.2 percent to 16.9 million cases last year, according to the Distilled Spirits Council, a national trade association that released figures last week. Revenue shot up 7.3 percent to $2.2 billion, it said. Premium brands, generally made in smaller batches with heftier prices, led sales and revenue gains.

Kentucky produces 95 percent of the world's bourbon supply, according to the Kentucky Distillers' Association. There are 4.9 million bourbon barrels aging in Kentucky, which outnumbers the state's population.

In the last year, Kentucky distilleries invested nearly $230 million in new and expanded production facilities, warehouses, visitor's centers, bottling lines and more, according to Eric Gregory, president of the Kentucky distillers' group. It's the largest expansion since Prohibition, he said.

(AP) ? Hundreds of people, including some of Michigan's political elite, gathered Monday to celebrate the late Rosa Parks on what would have been her 100th birthday by unveiling a postage stamp in her honor steps from the Alabama bus on which she stared down segregation nearly 60 years ago.

Parks, who died in 2005, became one of the enduring figures of the Civil Rights movement when she refused to cede her seat in the colored section of the Montgomery, Ala., bus to a white man after the whites-only section filled up. Her defiance and the ensuing black boycott of the city bus system helped the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. rise to national prominence.

"This is being done in sight of the bus where future generations can sit in a seat where Rosa Parks sat and refused to budge and in a seat where the world was changed," U.S. Sen. Carl Levin said before he and U.S. Rep. John Conyers, a fellow Democrat, pulled the curtain to reveal the Rosa Parks Forever Stamp, which bears her 1950's likeness.

The stamp ceremony was part of a 12-hour event at The Henry Ford in celebration of the 100th anniversary of Parks' birth that also featured speeches and live music.

At one point, officials cleared the vehicle and allowed Deputy Postmaster General Ronald Stroman ? who as a young lawyer worked on Conyers' staff while Parks worked at Conyers' Detroit office ? to sit on the bus by himself.

Stroman looked around the bus and gathered his thoughts before saying: "It's such a powerful experience to be actually in the seat that Rosa Parks sat in. It's almost emotional ? very overwhelming to be here."

The Parks stamp is the second in a set of civil rights stamps being issued this year by the U.S. Postal Service.

USPS launched the series Jan. 1 with the Emancipation Proclamation Forever Stamp, which was issued at The National Archives in Washington. In August, the series will culminate with the dedication of a stamp recognizing the 50th anniversary of the historic March on Washington.

The value of a Forever Stamp is the domestic First-Class Mail letter price in effect on the day of use. They always are sold at the same price as a regular First-Class Mail stamp.

Forever Stamps currently are being sold for 46 cents.

The Parks stamp went on sale Monday at post offices nationwide and at The Henry Ford, where dozens of people lined up to buy it, and nearby where collectors gathered to get their new stamps and other collectables stamped ? or officially "canceled" ? by a postal service employee.

Avid collector David Malhalab was one of the first in line to get stamps, pamphlets and other items canceled.

"Today is the Super Bowl or the championship game for stamp collectors," he said, seated at a table surrounded by his various stamped collectibles.

President Barack Obama issued a proclamation that was read at Monday's event by Detroit-area Democratic U.S. Rep. Gary Peters.

"As we mark the 100th anniversary of Rosa Parks' birth, we celebrate the life of a genuine American hero and remind ourselves that although the principle of equality has always been self-evident, it has never been self-executing," the proclamation reads.

"I call upon all Americans to observe this day with appropriate service, community and education programs to honor Rosa Parks' enduring legacy."

Man charged in fatal gun range shooting of ex-SEAL/author

GLEN ROSE, Texas (AP) ? A 25-year-old man was charged with murder in the deaths of former Navy SEAL and "American Sniper" author Chris Kyle and another man at a Texas gun range, the Texas Department of Public Safety said Sunday.

Sgt. Lonny Haschel said in a news release that 25-year-old Eddie Ray Routh of Lancaster was arraigned Saturday evening on two counts of capital murder.

Haschel said Erath County Sheriff's deputies responded to a call about a shooting at the Rough Creek Lodge, west of Glen Rose, at about 5:30 p.m. Saturday. Police found the bodies of Kyle, 38, and Chad Littlefield, 35, at the shooting range. Glen Rose is about 50 miles southwest of Fort Worth.

Police said Routh opened fire on Kyle and Littlefield around 3:30 p.m. Saturday, then fled in a Ford pickup truck. At about 8 p.m., Routh arrived at his home in Lancaster, about 17 miles southeast of Dallas. Police arrested him after a brief pursuit and took him to the Lancaster Police Department.

The Lancaster Police Department referred all calls to the Texas Department of Public Safety in Garland, and a phone message about where Routh is being held was not immediately returned Sunday.

The motive for the shooting was unclear.

Kyle wrote the best-selling book, "American Sniper: The Autobiography of the Most Lethal Sniper in U.S. Military History," detailing his 150-plus kills of insurgents from 1999 to 2009. A news release from Travis Cox, director of FITCO Cares, a nonprofit Kyle helped start, said Kyle served four tours of duty.

"Chris died doing what he filled his heart with passion ? serving soldiers struggling with the fight to overcome PTSD," Cox said in the release. "He will be forever missed."

Kyle is survived by his wife, Taya, and their children, the nonprofit's release said.

Kyle was sued by former Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura over a portion of the book that claims Kyle punched Ventura in a 2006 bar fight over unpatriotic remarks. Ventura says the punch never happened and that the claim by Kyle defamed him.

Kyle had asked that Ventura's claims of invasion of privacy and "unjust enrichment" be dismissed, saying there was no legal basis for them. But a federal judge said the lawsuit should proceed. Both sides were told to be ready for trial by Aug. 1.

Judge: No show trial for German far-right suspects

BERLIN (AP) ? A senior German judge has rejected calls to give the public greater access at the trial of a woman suspected of involvement in a far-right murder spree that has shaken the country's security establishment since coming to light over a year ago.

The trial of Beate Zschaepe ? the sole surviving member of a neo-Nazi trio that allegedly killed nine businessmen and a policewoman between 2000 and 2007 ? is expected to generate intense media interest in Germany and Turkey, where at least four of the victims were born.

Part of the case will center on how Germany's well-funded police and intelligence services failed to link the killings of nine men with ethnic minority backgrounds to far-right fugitives for more than a decade. Several senior security officials have resigned following revelations that authorities for years believed the murders to be the work of immigrant gangs, had informers close to the suspects and destroyed evidence linked to the case.

Karl Huber, the president of the Munich regional court where the case will be heard starting April 17, said in an interview published Saturday that reporters and members of the public will share just 100 seats during what is expected to be a yearlong trial.

"We are going to conduct proceedings in accordance with the rule of law, and not a show trial for the public," he was quoted as saying by Munich's Sueddeutsche Zeitung. "We won't do this in a football stadium the way totalitarian states do."

Huber said the court considered screening the proceedings in overflow rooms used in trials such as that of Anders Behring Breivik, who was sentenced to a 21-year prison term by a court in Norway last year for killing 77 people and wounding 200 others in 2011. Norwegian authorities even broadcast the trial to courthouses across the country, so the victims' relatives could watch.

But German court rules prohibit such arrangements and so access will be strictly limited to avoid a mistrial being declared, Huber told Sueddeutsche Zeitung.

Zschaepe, 38, faces a possible life sentence if convicted of involvement in the murders. She is also charged with helping found the group that called itself National Socialist Underground and with many other crimes.

The other two core members of the group, Uwe Mundlos and Uwe Boenhardt, were found dead in an apparent murder-suicide after a bungled bank robbery on Nov. 4, 2011.

Four other men are also charged with various crimes for allegedly helping the NSU, including providing the murder weapon. The prosecution case against the men has been complicated by the fact that some may have been informers for Germany's security services at the time of their alleged crimes.
