Nearly six months after a startling attack at a Lander University-owned apartment complex, the school is trying a new approach to keep everyone safe.?
Sophomore Kierra Bracey lives in Bearcat Village, the apartment complex where three young women were sexually assaulted in March. Police say masked men barged into an apartment.?
Bobby Henderson and Cameren Jones, who at the time were Presbyterian College students, were arrested and charged with the crime. Police say the pair targeted Jones' ex-girlfriend and her roommates.?
Bracey says, ?People were very shocked, more concerned about themselves and stuff.? Bracey says things are quieter now.?
Campus officials have not stopped trying to find ways to improve safety, including a plan to add surveillance cameras at Bearcat Village. Officials say the plan was already in place before the attack in March.?
Lander?s Vice President of Student Affairs Randy Bouknight says, ?Those cameras don't prevent crime. They just help you solve it sometimes.??
The rest of campus already has more than 160 cameras. Police say the technology is constantly monitored by officers and residence hall staff.?
Bouknight says, ?We've had some situations where a crime or an incident occurred and they (the cameras) helped us identify who was there or what happened.??
But Bouknight is quick to say that the cameras probably won't stop most criminal, which means students have to take care of one another.?
Bracey?s boyfriend, Jarvis Miller, says, ?Instead of her (Bracey) walk by herself to her room, I just walk her back.??
Lander officials have already done wiring work for the cameras, and they hope to have them installed before the end of the school year.?
Jones and Henderson remain in jail and are awaiting the next steps in the criminal cases.?
Other local colleges, including Furman, Clemson, and USC Upstate, tell 7 On Your Side they also have security cameras on campus. Police tell us the cameras have helped in solving car break-ins and cases of stolen electronics.?
