travel & leisure: Super Camping Suggestions For Making A Great Trip

Going camping? Stay tuned for some information about a few of the challenges you may encounter. Although in general camping is pretty simple and safe, it is still important to take some time to prepare yourself for such an adventure. Keep reading for smart tips.

You should be sure you have survival and first aid kits. These can be useful for any situation and can extend your trip. Your kit can also prevent situations from becoming worse and make it easier to get an individual in need to safety. Always make sure that your cell phone is with you when you get to your campsite, and it should be fully charged. You might want to bring an extra battery as well just in case your original runs low. A cell phone will be your best friend in the event of an emergency, so keep it charged and available.

Bring some entertaining items for your trip. Of course, if you bring too many electronics, you may defeat the purpose of the trip, but there is nothing better than sitting beside a lake reading, or listening to music beside a camp fire at night. Bring duct tape with you since it can help you in many situations. This can help to seal and protect your tent and even protect your body.

Duct tape is a valuable item to carry for many different situations. You can use to help seal leaks and rips and hold together important things that break. It can hold your shoes together if they fall apart, and you can even use it in case of emergencies for a temporary bandage or sling. Be certain you are prepared for any event when you're camping. While it's crucial to plan ahead for things, sometimes things don't go according to plan. Weather can change, situations can arise, injuries or illness can strike. Try not to take unnecessary risks that can yield injury or illness. Remember that you, your possessions and your family members are inevitably going to get dirty. Don't stress out when it inevitably happens. Enjoy your time and don't afraid to be messy. You can go back to normal when you go home.

Take some preventative steps in order to avoid inadvertently draining the batteries in your flashlights during your next camping adventure. You can easily press the "on" switch on a flashlight when digging in your camping bag. To prevent draining the batteries, place them in your flashlight backwards. That way, the flashlight cannot possibly drain the batteries if the ON button is bumped. Carry a handkerchief or bandanna while camping. This single fabric piece can be used as a carrying bag, hand towel, paper towel, potholder, and blotter. As you can see, a handkerchief can serve many different purposes on a camping trip.

Before you head out on a long camping expedition, pack and then unpack your bags a few times first. This way, you can find the way that all of your gear fits into the bags and help reduce the chances that you have forgotten to pack anything. Bring along an emergency survival kit, and keep it on you for the duration of your camping trip. A survival kit should include items like a flare gun, matches that are waterproof, a knife and other items you think you may need. For any life threatening situation, these items may be the only thing standing between you and disaster. Your kit should not be left behind at the camp site, but should be carried with you wherever you go.

Consult your physician if you plan to go camping with a significant medical issue. There could be issues that you aren't aware of. You may need to take some extra precautions that you didn't consider. Duct tape is an interesting item to be included in your inventory while camping. It is nearly as useful while camping as it is around the house. You can slap a piece of it on a leaking air mattress. Also, it can help to seal any tears, which can make your item usable for the duration of your trip. If you plan to take a long hike, be sure to place some on feet to avoid developing blisters. In a pinch, it can even serve as a bandage for injuries. Figure out how to use a compass and read a map in advance. Even if you are familiar with your intended campsite, you could still get lost because many areas look the same. This skill can potentially save your life.

A utility knife can serve you well on your camping trip. The versatility of a utility knife makes it priceless when you are out camping. Bring one to slip into your pocket and throw a backup knife into your bag. You never know when your utility knife will come in handy!

Though you should already understand this, you are a visitor to natural surroundings. Do not leave your campsite filthy or throw trash around. When you're done camping, leave your campsite looking as it did before you got there. If you respect nature, it will last for years. When you go camping, check to be sure there are restrooms available. There might not be a portable toilet. All you need is a secluded area to relieve yourself. Always pack enough toilet paper, or you may learn about leaves the hard way.

An orange peel can help to avoid insect bites. Don't worry if you forget the bug spray. Seasoned campers suggest that you can rub your skin with the inside of an ripe orange peel. Mosquitoes hate the smell and will fly away for a few good hours; and you will be free of the nuisance. Camping is a timeless pastime, popular with people of all ages. You can make your next camping trip pleasurable for all who participate when you have the right knowledge. After reading this article, you now have insights for how to make the most of your next camping trip.

Former President Bush moved out of intensive care

HOUSTON (AP) ? Former President George H.W. Bush's condition continued to improve Saturday, prompting doctors to move him out of intensive care, a spokesman said.

"President Bush's condition has improved, so he has been moved today from the intensive care unit to a regular patient room at The Methodist Hospital to continue his recovery," family spokesman Jim McGrath said Saturday. "The Bushes thank everyone for their prayers and good wishes."

Bush was hospitalized Nov. 23 for treatment of a bronchitis-related cough. He was moved to intensive care at the Houston hospital on Dec. 23 after he developed a fever.

On Friday, McGrath said Bush had improved since arriving in the ICU. He said he was alert and in good spirits and was even doing some singing.

McGrath said Saturday morning that future updates on Bush's condition would be made as warranted.

Bush, the 41st president, is the country's oldest living former president by a few months.

Samsung offers free flip covers and TecTiles for GS III and Note II device registrations

DNP Samsung doles out free flip covers and Tectiles if you register your device, only S III and Note II owners may apply

If you just received a Galaxy S III or a Note II this holiday season, you could do yourself a favor and register it on Samsung's Facebook page to get even more goodies from Santa Sammy. What do you get in exchange for handing over some personal details and giving the Korean company access to your timeline? Why, a free flip cover and six TecTiles, which usually go for about $15 for a pack of five. We haven't heard much about wide adoption of these programmable NFC tags, but maybe it'll gain some traction after a recent 3.0 app update and this promotional giveaway. We're not sure why the offer doesn't extend to other Samsung phones, but maybe they just don't have enough of those pastel covers to go around.

Like math? Thank your motivation, not IQ

Looks like Tiger Mom had it half-right: Motivation to work hard and good study techniques, not IQ, lead to better math skills, a new study shows.?

But there's a catch: The findings, published this month in the journal Child Development, show that keeping children's heads in the math books by force probably won't help.

The analysis of more than 3,500 German children found those who started out solidly in the middle of the pack in the fifth grade could jump to the 63rd percentile by eighth grade if they were very motivated and used effective learning strategies, said lead author Kou Murayama, a psychology researcher at the University of California at Los Angeles.

"The growth in math achievement was predicted by motivation and learning strategies," Murayama told LiveScience. "Given that IQ did not show this kind of effect, we think this is impressive."

Math on the brain
Just how innate math skills are is a controversial question. Some studies show that math skills emerge in babies, while others show that culture plays a huge role in shaping those skills.

For instance, men consistently outperform women on standardized math tests. But those differences may be due to math anxiety, or cultural influences, other studies have shown.

And in opinion surveys, people in Eastern countries often rate effort as most important to math ability, while Westerners typically say math ability is inborn.

To find out which factor was more important, Murayama's team tracked about 3,500 children from Bavaria as they completed an IQ test and an assessment of their algebraic and geometric know-how from 5th grade to 10th grade.

The researchers also gave students surveys that measured intrinsic motivation to work at math by asking them to rate, on a scale of 1 to 5, how much they agreed with statements like, "I invest a lot of effort in math, because I am interested in the subject." They also reported how motivated they were by outside factors like getting good grades.

The survey also asked students how much they relied on rote memorization versus "deep-learning" strategies that had them tie their math knowledge to other areas of their life.

Tiger Moms vindicated
Not surprisingly, at the start of the study, kids with high IQs performed the best at math.

  1. Science news from NBCNews.com

    1. The year's top ancient mysteries (and missteps)

The past year saw plenty of controversy over ancient mysteries ? and we're not just talking about Maya prophecies. So what happened to "Franken-saurus," the Gospel of Jesus' Wife and the plan to clone a woolly mammoth?

    2. Unselfish brain cells found in monkeys
    3. Starvation didn't wipe out saber-toothed cats
    4. Two new orchid species found

But in a vindication of exacting Tiger Moms everywhere, effective studying techniques and motivation, not IQ, predicted who had most improved their math skills by 10th grade. Kids who started out with average math abilities but were in the top 10 percent in terms of learning strategies and motivation jumped up by about 13 percentage points over the course of the study in their math abilities, Murayama said. Apathetic kids with high IQs showed no such jump.

Unfortunately, forcing kids to hit the books every night won't create math prodigies. External factors such as parental pressure or grades didn't produce a lasting boost in math ability.

"It is not a good idea to force students to learn mathematics," Murayama said.

Instead, people who were driven by their own interest improved the most. So rather than keeping Junior's nose to the grindstone, it may be more helpful for parents or teachers to show him how math ties to real life (for instance, understanding that two $3 candy bars cost $6 rather than just memorizing times tables), Murayama said.

Leigh Steinberg: Snail's Pace NFL Pacing Results From Replays

The National Football League is America's passion. Dominating the top 10 of Nielsen television ratings, estimates are that 180 million people watched part of a game last week, packed stadia, fantasy fanatics, betters, our collective obsession. This was the marriage made in heaven for contemporary appetites for quick bursts of action in tightly contained segments, made for television and every platform of content supply. But this pacing and immediacy are being severely impacted by endless instant replays and late calls. And the sport is starting to drag.

Scoring plays carry a thrilling ending. There is a buildup and development to a long pass play, a dramatic return, or a brutal struggle by a runner to score. The player dives over a pilon or breaks free into the endzone and the in-stadium crowd and television viewers erupt in exultation or frustration. It is a moment of extreme excitement that separates the sport from others. But, not anymore. Every touchdown is reviewed by a team of supervisors upstairs in the stadium. None of the process is visible on the screen or in person. There is an endless and boring delay. The excitement is replaced by uncertainty. And then comes the announcement: "upon further review," disconnected to the play and anti-climatic. This destroys the immediacy inherent in every scoring play.

Zzzzzzzzzzz.

These delays give defenses a subtle an edge over offenses. They can break the rhythm of a quarterback's play and destroy momentum while giving the defense extra time to rest.

Turnovers are impactful moments in NFL games. A frenetic scramble for a fumbled football is untangled to reveal which player and which team has recovered.

Since turnovers can completely alter momentum and the course of a game, they lead to collective reaction. A key interception is exciting. Not any more. The play is reviewed. Young men turn old, autumn turns to winter, and still there is no decision. Boring. And virtually every pass reception or incompletion seems to engender an interference call. On pass play after pass play either the wide receiver or the defensive back seems unable to conform to the standard of legal conduct and flag after flag after flag ensues. This destroys the immediacy and flow of most pass plays. It is impossible for a fan to display emotion without the referee altering the result. There is no certainty.

Zzzzzzzzzzz.

The action on a NFL field is largely subject to head coach prerogative to challenge a play. Second after second, minute after minute the replay process slugs along and most calls on the field end up being confirmed. Why do we have highly-trained, experienced officials on the field to make calls on the field at all?

If their judgments are going to be reviewed non-stop, what was all the controversy about the ineptitude of replacement referees? If play after play is subject to review we can have fans volunteer as officials, no matter how many times they blow a call it will not matter since boring reviews have replaced real football action and pacing. Who ever guaranteed that football would resemble slide rule or adding machine exactitude. A certain number of questionable calls occur in every team sport. It is desirable to minimize these officiating errors, especially if they alter a game result, but even replays produce debatable decisions. This will always occur as long as fallible humans are evaluating film through imperfect human perception. Every behavioral experiment in observation of identical events shows that honest people have different perceptions of what they see.Fans and players have always complained about but tolerated occasional bad calls as "part of the game". When the urgency and immediacy of fan experience becomes replaced with uncertainty, doubt and enervating delay -- it is time to take a new look at these rules changes.

The games are becoming longer, and the additional time adds nothing to the fan experience. Week 3 in 2011 saw an average game time of 3 hrs and 11 minutes. Week 3 in 2012 had games that averaged 3 hrs and 23 minutes. The longer games are not a one season aberration. Games in 2011 were longer than games in 2010, and 2012 was slower. The NFL adjusted half-time length and time between plays some years ago because it feared the games were running too long. Replays have resulted in slower game times and pacing. Fans accept the commercial breaks and use them as a time to visit the bathroom or kitchen or debate past plays. When thrilling action is replaced by interminable delays and the NFL pacing is replacing by snores, it is time for an instant "review" of the use of instant replay.

US consumers lose confidence as fiscal cliff nears

(AP Photo/David Goldman)

WASHINGTON (AP) ? U.S. consumers peering over the "fiscal cliff" don't like what they see.

Fears of sharp tax increases and government spending cuts set to take effect next week sent consumer confidence tumbling in December to its lowest level since August.

The Conference Board said Thursday that its consumer confidence index fell for the second straight month in December to 65.1, down from 71.5 in November.

The survey showed consumers' outlook for the next six months deteriorated to its lowest level since 2011 ? a signal to Lynn Franco, the board's director of economic indicators, that consumers are worried about the tax hikes and spending cuts that take effect Jan. 1 if the White House and Congress can't reach a budget deal.

Earlier this week a report showed consumers held back shopping this holiday season, another indication of their concerns about possible tax increases.

The December drop in confidence "is obvious confirmation that a sudden and serious deterioration in hopes for the future took place in December ? presumably reflecting concern about imminent 'fiscal cliff' tax increases," said Pierre Ellis, an economist with Decision Economics.

The decline in confidence comes at a critical time when the economy is showing signs of improvement elsewhere.

A recovery in housing market is looking more sustainable. On Thursday, the government said new-home sales increased in November at the fastest seasonally adjusted annual pace in 2? years.

And the job market has made slow but steady gains in recent months. The average number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits over the past month fell to the lowest level since March 2008.

But the political wrangling in Washington threatens the economy's slow, steady progress. President Barack Obama and House returned to Washington Thursday to resume talks with just days to go before the deadline.

Mixed signals over those negotiations led to a rocky day on Wall Street.

Stocks plunged early after the weak consumer confidence report and a warning from Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid that the government appeared to be headed over the "fiscal cliff." At one point, the Dow Jones industrial average fell as much as 150 points.

But the market came back in the final hour of trading on a potential sign of movement in the talks: Republican leaders announced they would bring the House back into session on Sunday evening. The Dow recouped nearly all of its losses to close down just 18 points at 13,096.

A short fall over the cliff won't push the economy into recession. But most economists expect some tax increases to take effect next year. That could slow economic growth.

While consumers are more worried about where the economy is headed, they were upbeat about present conditions, according to the latest survey. Their assessment of current economic conditions rose this month to the highest level since August 2008.

A key reason for that is gas prices hit a 2012 low of $3.21 a gallon last week. Normally, that would prompt consumers to spend more on holiday shopping.

But the opposite has happened. A report from MasterCard Advisors Spending pulse indicated sales grew in the two months before Christmas at the weakest rate since 2008, when the country was in a deep recession.

There were other distractions this holiday season. In late October, Superstorm Sandy battered the Northeast and mid-Atlantic states, which account for 24 percent of U.S. retail sales. That coupled with the presidential election, hurt sales during the first half of November.

Shopping picked up in the second half of November. But "fiscal cliff" worries dampened sales in December.

The National Retail Federation, the nation's largest retail trade group, remains optimistic that sales won't be quite as bad as earlier reports have suggested. It is sticking to its forecast for total sales for November and December to be up 4.1 percent to $586.1 billion this year. That's more than a percentage point lower than the growth in each of the past two years, and the smallest increase since 2009 when sales were up just 0.3 percent.

Samsung Galaxy Note II reportedly coming in black, triggers monolithic memories

Samsung Galaxy Note II reportedly coming in black, still won't be stealthy

Samsung gave Galaxy S III buyers a small rainbow of color choices in the summer, and there's signs that the Galaxy Note II might receive a similarly resplendent treatment. A supposed press image obtained by AndroidSlash shows the giant smartphone draped in a previously unavailable black that's potentially very striking -- and more than a little reminiscent of 2001's species-changing monoliths. There's no official word from Samsung on its authenticity, although we wouldn't be surprised knowing the company's history and the Note II's strong track record. When a theoretically niche device is selling like gangbusters, some added diversity could be in order. Just don't expect any Starchildren as a result.

Freeze off those holiday love handles

LOS ANGELES ? Thousands of Americans are freezing off their fat this Christmas, rather than burning it off at the gym, after signing up for a plastic surgery treatment that uses extreme cold to blast away love handles, muffin tops and spare tires.

The procedure, which can be done during a lunch hour, is proving particularly popular with men who do not want surgery or liposuction.

Those seeking a pre-emptive strike against the festive bulge are hooked up to a machine that uses vacuum pressure and deep cooling to target fat below the skin, freezing unwanted fat cells in the waist, hips, thighs, buttocks, abdomen, arms and back.

Patients can answer e-mails and phone calls, read a book or watch a film while having the CoolSculpting treatment. It is used for small areas of fat that refuse to budge with exercise and is done without anaesthetic or medication.

According to plastic surgeons, it is best for those who are about 7 kilograms to 9 kilograms overweight and removes 20 to 30 per cent of fat in the targeted area, with the results showing gradually over a period of weeks after the procedure.

At Marina Plastic Surgery, which has so far performed 4,000 of the procedures in Los Angeles and Beverly Hills, Dr. Grant Stevens, a plastic surgeon, says: ?I had my love handles done myself. The fat dies, the skin tightens, it?s incredibly easy and it only takes about an hour.

?The beauty is, it?s permanent. If you eat a lot, you?ll gain weight in other places, so you need to keep going to the gym and watching your diet, but the fat that we freeze doesn?t come back.?

Stevens said there had been a rush for the procedure by men, who were attracted by its non-invasive nature compared with liposuction. There are no incisions, scars or suction hoses. Only 13 per cent of his usual clientele are men, but for fat freezing it rises to 45 per cent.

?The men have their love handles treated,? he says. ?The other place is the tummy, and they also have their man boobs done. Women go for love handles, muffin tops, the thighs and arms.

?Patients like it because there is no discomfort during the procedure and it only takes one hour to lose one inch.

?Although this method does not offer the more extensive fat loss available from liposuction, it is a great alternative for those with smaller areas of fat.?

The temperature of the machines used to freeze away the fat is kept secret, but the idea of using extreme cold to damage fat cells first surfaced in the 1970s, when it was discovered that some children who ate ice pops developed cheek dimples.

According to Dr. Mathew Avram, of the Massachusetts General Hospital Dermatology Laser and Cosmetic Centre, who helped to create the technique, it ?targets and cools fat cells to temperatures that trigger their natural death.?

He adds: ?Because lipids crystallize faster than normal cells, there is no damage to nerves or other tissue. Over the next few weeks and months, the fat cells shrink and begin to die.?

Doctors have warned that the system, which was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2010, is not a weight-loss treatment. It costs about $750 US for each session, and each love handle is considered a separate session.

Md. School Celebrates Anniversary With Family Tree ? CBS Baltimore

By DANIELLE E. GAINES
The Frederick News-Post

FREDERICK, Md. (AP) ? There are family trees ? and then there?s the Linganore High School family tree, a project the school started to celebrate its 50th anniversary.

A sprawling, whimsical painted tree across the windows of the front office has become a showcase for photos of Linganore alumni with family and friends who are also Lancers. The tree has grown steadily since it was started Nov. 1.

The group is sharing the photos on its Facebook page.

There are pictures from weddings, trips around the world and outings on the boat.

One of the school?s custodians, a 1971 graduate, submitted a photo of her two sons, who graduated in 1997 and 2003. Their father also graduated from the school in 1967.

Another couple, who graduated together and will be married next year, also submitted a photo.

The Cook family ? with graduates from `79, `02, `04, `06, `07 and soon-to-be `13 ? is listed as ?an LHS dynasty.?

There are many of them in town, joked Pam Knight, the school?s attendance secretary.

She jokes about when her family will require a whole branch of the tree. She graduated in 1982 and married a 1980 alumnus. They had three children ? two boys and a girl ? who were also Lancers. One grandchild is attending the preschool inside the school.

Knight plans to take family photos to submit to the tree this holiday. In total, there will be 15 or so alumni from the family together, she said.

Already, she?s submitted a photo of the seven Linganore graduates who work at her Frederick business, Soft Images Hair Salon.

Natalie Rebetsky, an English teacher at the school, has been coordinating the entries. She said there was a spike after Thanksgiving and she expects another spike at Christmas.

A 28-year veteran at the school, Rebetsky noticed how generations attend the school in an unusual way. ?I always said I?d have to retire when I started teaching children of students I?ve had before. That happened six years ago, and obviously I haven?t retired,? she said.

Rebetsky said the tree is a lovely reminder of the school?s roots.

?At Linganore, a lot of the graduates stay in the community. It?s such a warm feeling when you meet somebody ? and then you realize you?ve known them for a long time,? Rebetsky said.

Eric Chua : Life, Business and Real Estate in Singapore ? Take ...

Marketing by way of the internet can be a tricky process in the beginning, especially when you?re competing with so many other companies offering the same products. A key concept in marketing on the Internet is to have multiple promotional and marking ideas working so you can choose which ones work best. Here you will find some techniques to get you started.

The most effective marketing strategy is to have quality content on your site. Make sure you review your content often to ensure it is presenting the right message to your customers. Have someone else look over your content, too. A fresh point of view is invaluable. Give your content a final review by using a good grammar and spell check program to insure that it is error-free.

In the end, successful Internet promotion occurs when a problem is recognized and a solution is found for it. Every day, you will have to solve problems in your business and help others as well. By helping others with problems, they will ultimately become great customers that return year after year.

TIP! Give away a free gift with a purchase; this will make your customers feel like they are valued. Rewarding customers is something that doesn?t get addressed enough in most Internet marketing campaigns.

Every email you send out should ask your customers to take a specific action right away. You can try subscribing to a publication or going to a website. This also helps you measure the success of your email marketing since those actions can be tracked and evaluated!

A great marketing took is providing a place on your site for users who want to post a review. Customers like to post their actual experiences with your products and these can provide you with new sales, too.

Before considering search engine rankings or things of that nature, you must build a website that people will want to visit. If you have a website, start out with this step. When your site is set up correctly and works well to begin with, you save yourself effort down the line.

TIP! Hold events and promotions to attract traffic. A one-dollar sale is a great way to get people in your virtual door.

Partner with other online businesses to create interesting combination deals that will attract customers and help you share your customer bases. Linking to several markets will increase the amount of sales you have. An example of this would be using an online book agent. They help to negotiate prices for people to make sure they get the best rates on things like airfare, hotels and car rentals. This is a great tactic for business with similar products that do not rival each other.

In terms of Internet promotion, you must make use of any new software or important advancement that shows up in the world of modern technology. If you do not follow trends you will not attract customers and they will doubt you. Show them that you know about new innovations, and you will get respect.

Web Marketing

TIP! ?Guaranteed? is a very strong positive word to use in internet marketing. A guarantee will let people know that they can trust in your company and your products.

When trying to get the most out of an Web marketing campaign, you have to create additional Web marketing strategies. Your campaign should be part of a cycle where new customers are always searching for and finding your business and then buying your products.

Follow up with your clients by cross-selling, advising them of other similar merchandise that you offer that they might be interested in, via an email with links to online catalogs or sales sheets. If your site sells movies and a customer buys something from a particular genre, consider sending them links to other movies you have to offer in that same genre. You will increase the amount of sales you generate when you offer them products similar to past purchases.

Create a website that is interesting and designed well. The success of any Website marketing campaign depends on how well the website is created. Because your site is laid out well and of interest to visitors, they will be prompted to stay longer. The layout should make people to stay around the website and look at everything.

TIP! One smart way to build a contact list is to create a squeeze page. Basically, you?re creating a page that will draw your visitors in to sign up for something, thus allowing you to gain their emails.

When you are writing your marketing copy, make use of HTML tags that emphasize certain words or phrases. Use different font types to increase the effectiveness of different words. This helps convey the message to the customer exactly the way you want, providing extra emphasis and clarity where necessary.

You will gain more business if you allow more payment options. Not everyone has credit cards or even a bank account, so offering another option can help increase your sales.

Strategic placement of ads is the cornerstone of Internet promotion. There are many companies who will allow you to do this, and Google AdSense is a very popular one. You can get a lot of advertising for a decent price and minimal effort this way.

TIP! In order to create the most effective Internet marketing strategies, it is important to track conversation around, and reception of, online events and promotions. If you establish an event, promotion, or ambition online, look to how your visitors react on blogs and forums.

Keep an eye on competitors and their tactics, and react accordingly. If your competitors? websites make you want to buy something, analyze the techniques used to make you feel that way.

Free Shipping

You may want to offer your customer incentives to increase immediate sales. You could offer them expedited or free shipping, or perhaps a free gift wrapping service. You may want to offer free shipping to the first hundred people purchasing a new product. This induces people to make a purchase quickly because of a perceived discount.

TIP! Add intrigue and personal touches to your marketing campaigns. Use your name in your advertisements and have a picture of your face on your website.

Focus is the most important part of Internet promotion. Having all your ducks in a row as you prepare a marketing push will ensure that you have the best course of action for your site planned out. You will reap the benefits in the future by following this advice!

Indra equips Uruguay with VoIP first | Air Traffic Management | Air ...

Indra has deployed in Uruguay, with the collaboration of DINACIA (Direcci?n Nacional De Aviaci?n Civil e Infraestructura Aeron?utica de Uruguay), the first controller-pilot communications network completely based on IP technology, which provides full coverage to the nation?s air traffic.

Through the commissioning of this network, Uruguay becomes the first country in the world to adopt such an advanced land-air communications system

On November 12, commercial flight TAM8023 established communications with the air traffic control centre of Carrasco in Montevideo, Uruguay, with the use of this digital system. This was the test flight during which the IP communications network was officially validated to start its operations.

Its deployment followed the requirements and regulations established by EUROCAE (ED-137), the entity responsible for the standardisation of civil aeronautical equipment, and the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO). Indra has been a member of the EUROCAE (WG-67) work group, which established the IP communications standards since its creation.

The implementation of this system is a milestone in the history of air navigation. This is the first time that land-air communications in a country between the pilot and controller will not be based on analogue systems any more. Likewise, the new architecture will guarantee the future interoperability of the systems adopted in other countries, facilitating the coordination of air operations.

To this end, DINACIA has become the first air navigation service provider that has started using the new generation of systems based on IP technology, the technology that will replace today?s existing systems. Indra has become the first technological provider to implement this communications network.

Indra?s solution can be used to establish high quality voice communications, with the absence of noise and interference, while improving their availability and reliability. In addition, it replaces the connections used by an IP connection until now, making the system more cost-effective and efficient. La DINACIA

The network deployed by Indra includes the transmission systems designed by Park Air Systems UK at the stations of Carrasco, Colonia, Cardona, Salto, Tacuarembo, Melo, Santa Clara and San Antonio. All of these sites are managed by Indra?s Digital Communications System, which is fully integrated with the air traffic management automation system. Such integration represents an important advantage to air traffic controllers.

With this IP communication network, DINACIA has reached their goal of having a single primary frequency and another secondary frequency for the entire FIR, thus obtaining aircraft communications at lower levels than before.

Tongue Rings Have Come A Long Way In The Past Two Decades ...

Tongue rings are now not only the third most popular of all piercings, but they have also become much safer to have done.

Tongue rings were once only rarely seen and people heard more often the horror stories about people who get it done. That has changed a lot over the past couple of decades. Tongue piercings have become much more common due mainly to safer standards in the piercing industry.

Where once people would actually get their tongues pierced at home by friends they now realize the importance of going to a professional who has done tongue rings before. Unlike other parts of the body that are commonly pierced, the tongue has two major veins running through it. If either of these veins is even nicked by the needle, it can cause severe blood loss.

Even when done correctly tongue rings still take two to six weeks to heal. It can take up to six months for the piercing to be fully healed. During this healing time, it is not uncommon for the tongue to swell. This is easily treated with cold drinks, sucking on ice and taking anti-inflammatory to bring the swelling down.

Also during the healing time, it is highly recommended that the pierced person refrain from alcohol, smoking, and making tongue contact with other people. Spicy food is also something to be avoided. And after doing any of the above, it is strongly suggested that they rinse their mouths with alcohol free mouthwash. Being such a warm moist environment, people who get tongue rings need to take extra care to avoid infection. They must also tighten the barbell daily to avoid it coming lose and them swallowing it.

It is commonly believed the tongue rings first got started at the Gauntlet. The Gauntlet was the first professional body piercing shop in the United States. Founder of the Gauntlet and body-piercing pioneer, Elayne Angel, is often given credit with popularizing the tongue rings.

Julie enjoys sharing health and beauty tips. A great resource for flat irons, curling irons and hair styling tools of all kinds is My Hair Styling Tools.

Internet Marketing Viewz: Why Link Popularity Will Matter Less to SEO

If you are a search engine optimizer you know how important link building is to your rankings. The problem is that these days most people are aware that link building works and have found ways to exploit and dominate the process.
I have heard stories ranging from Chinese sweatshop link builders to automated software solutions that essentially pollute the Internet with garbage (fake profiles, bogus blog comments, etc.). Anyone who attempts to game the system is usually doing everyone a

Eric Bledsoe Dunk: Chris Paul Lob Sets Up Ally Oop Slam In Clippers' 12th Straight Win (VIDEO)

Eric Bledsoe punctuated the Los Angeles Clippers' latest win with an ally oop slam dunk that came closer to knocking the Earth of its axis than Nibiru.

As is the case with so many of the highlight plays emanating out of Los Angeles these days (no Lakers were involved), Chris Paul set this one in motion. With the Clippers leading the Sacramento Kings, 95-83, in the final minute, CP3 got out on the break before lobbing the ball up for the trailing Bledsoe, who rose.. and rose.. and rose some more before reaching out with his right hand and slamming the ball home.

While Paul has assisted on many memorable dunks since arriving in Lob City, it's not too often that he's collaborating with a teammate his own size. Listed at 6' 1", Bledsoe is just an inch taller than Paul and had to soar a lot farther to get a hand on this pass than Blake Griffin or DeAndre Jordan would have had they been on the receiving end of the pass. The dynamic 23-year-old Bledsoe has been dubbed "Mini-LeBron" by Jamal Crawford for just the type of jaw-dropping power and athleticism that he displayed on this play.

WATCH VIDEO ABOVE

The emphatic slam wrapped up the Clips' 12th-straight win, establishing a new record for a franchise that has never known prolonged prosperity. The win moves the Clippers to 20-6 on the season, leaving them just a game back of Oklahoma City for the best record in the NBA. Had the Mayan apocalypse not been debunked then surely such success by Los Angeles' other team would have seemed a herald of the end times. But from December 22, 2012 it may just be the new normal.

Resume Writers' Digest: Guest Post: The Best-Kept Traffic Secret For ...

Guest Blog Post by Jim Edwards

Did you realize that thousands of website operators use a?simple technique to generate targeted visitors to their?websites without paying a dime in advertising? It's true.

In fact, the technique works so well that many of them?don't want you to discover how they get those thousands of?website visitors and make so many sales on virtual "auto-pilot."

Their method?

Creating tightly focused articles other people publish in?their ezines (online magazines and email newsletters) and?post on their websites. This method rates so powerful that?some even call it "the web's best-kept traffic secret."

Now, you may ask, "Why would an ezine publisher or website?owner publish my articles for their subscribers?"

The answer: Content!

Over a 100,000 ezines and newsletters operate on the web?(along with millions of websites) covering everything from?pets and cooking to investments and real estate. Many of?them need tightly focused content and they simply can't?produce all of it themselves.

Look at it this way... it's the same reason newspapers use?the Associated Press. Individual newspapers often can't?afford staff writers to cover every story, so they accept?articles from outside their organization.

You can do the exact same thing for various ezines and?websites catering to your niche audience!

You can get valuable publicity -- exposure you often?couldn't even pay for if you wanted to -- by providing?valuable, content-rich articles in exchange for a byline?and a link to your website (called a "resource box")!

The following represent only a few of the enormous benefits?of writing and distributing simple articles online:

  • Attain "Expert" Status.?Let's face it! In the eyes of virtually everyone who reads?your articles you rank as the "expert" on the subject.?Just look at people who write newspaper columns. You?may disagree with their viewpoints, but they still have an?elevated status in your mind compared to the "average Joe"?off the street.
  • Pre-sell Website Visitors.?If your article appeals to a niche audience hungry for more?information on a very focused subject, you actually pre-sell them better than any sales pitch. In their minds,?you've already delivered content they really want so when?they click over to your site you already have a?"reputation" in their minds.
  • Traffic Lasts Longer.?Even though the Internet changes very quickly, webmasters?are usually very slow to remove content from their sites.?Once you get an article posted on another person's website,?you have an excellent chance of that article staying there?for weeks, months, even years.
  • Increase Links To Your Site.?In a recent search I found just a dozen of my articles?posted on over 813 different websites! Not only do those?postings bring me traffic, but they also help my search?engine positioning because of my increased "Link?Popularity."?
  • Builds Your Affiliate Base.?Fact: Affiliates always take the path of least resistance.?If you provide excellent articles they can easily post on?their sites or copy and paste into their ezines, your?affiliates will promote you more often and more effectively?compared to those who don't give them tools.?Plus, as you make more sales and publish articles, other?people will see you providing excellent tools and will want?to sign up as your affiliate so they can use them too!
  • Build a Huge "Opt-In" Email List.?You can use articles to build up a huge list of subscribers?by simply compiling several articles into a series and?delivering them at preset intervals.?Often called a "mini-course," this technique allows you not?only to prove to your subscribers that you deliver great?information, but enables you to capture their name and?email adress so you can send them articles and special?offers in the future (with their permission).?
  • Requires No Special Skills.?People often think they need to be a "writer" in order to?publish articles, but that's not true!?FACT: If you have a passion for a subject and can talk and?explain things like you would to a friend over a cup of?coffee, you can write articles people will love to read.?So if you operate a website selling virtually any type of?product or service (whether your own or as an affiliate),?publishing and promoting with articles should rank high on?your list of traffic generation strategies.?No other method of generating targeted traffic to your?website provides the quality, quantity and steadiness of?traffic in such a simple, straightforward, and cost-?effective manner.?

Jim Edwards is a syndicated newspaper columnist and the co-author of an amazing new ebook, "Turn Words Into Traffic,"?that will teach you how to use free articles to quickly?drive thousands of targeted visitors to your website or?affiliate link!

Movie review: Les Miserables | canada.com

Les Miserables

Starring Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried. Directed by Tom Hooper.

Rating: Parental Guidance

Advisory: violence, sexually suggestive scenes

Running time: 158 minutes

Four stars out of five

The idea of a nearly three-hour movie where every single line of dialogue is offered up in song is exhausting. So is the notion of another take on Les Mis?rables, the Broadway phenomenon that hogged the pop culture spotlight for more than a decade and still failed to impress upon Americans their democratic debt to the French.

Yet, 32 years after Cosette?s windblown image and a waving tricolour became synonymous with Victor Hugo?s story of the June Rebellion and its victims, director Tom Hooper and the Hollywood Studios have created a filmed version of Les Mis that offers something the stage musical could not: close-ups.

This obvious advantage of the cinematic form might not seem all that important for people who?ve already latched on to the bosom of Liberty leading the people, and embraced Les Mis as a music-first experience ? but one should never underestimate the importance of a face that stretches 20 metres across a giant silver screen.

Humans are programmed to react to the tiniest change in facial musculature, allowing screen actors to access a whole other tool chest in their bid to animate character, and this advantage was clearly not lost on Hooper, who gives every faux urchin, enchantress, revolutionary and lawman a chance to showcase his or her thespian stuff.

Successfully creating an entire world before the lens, Hooper (The King?s Speech) develops a specific camera language to help him articulate such abstracts as mood, motivation and historical context.

Framing his characters in sooty black shadows ? frequently dousing their faces with rain as they gaze heavenward for an explanation for their continuing misery, Hooper pulls us into an intimate space with this tragic ensemble.

And in case you thought this might have some streak of upbeat brightness, let me be the first to pummel that optimism out of you before the emotional abuse begins in earnest.

This is a dark journey from start to finish as we follow the heartbreaking saga of Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman). A good man who was forced to steal a loaf of bread to save his sister?s child at the height of revolutionary famine, Valjean is still a prisoner when we first meet him in the film?s opening scene hauling a square-rigger into dry dock alongside the other hard labourers.

?Look down?? they sing as the ever-vigilant guard Javert (Russell Crowe) eyes them like a bitter shepherd. As the slave chorus chants, Hooper alternates between close-ups of our two opposing heroes.

On one side we have the gnarled grimace of Valjean, a man who feels abandoned by everyone now that he?s spent the best years of his life as a convict. On the other, we have the symmetrical and stoic features of Javert, a man who finds a genuine sense of purpose in stalking Valjean with an edge of self-righteous compulsion.

They are both angry reflections of the other, destined to self-destruct, until the softening influence of a woman intervenes to alter both their fates.

Fantine (Anne Hathaway) is a virtuous woman, but she was exploited by her first love and abandoned with her daughter Cosette (Amanda Seyfried).

Shortly after we meet the moon-faced martyr in act one, she dies a horrific death ? but not before her altruism forever melts the heart of Valjean, or the first strains of an echoing musical motif worms its way into your subconscious.

Yes, Fantine dreamed a dream ? and for the next 90 minutes, it spirals into a feverish nightmare of narrative as her daughter is abused by a couple of colourful grifters (Sacha Baron Cohen and Helena Bonham Carter), adopted by the transformed Valjean, courted by a student-turned-revolutionary Marius (Eddie Redmayne) and finally released into love?s arms in the final scene.

These interpersonal bits and pieces of Hugo?s brilliant, bulky novel reach the screen with value-added cinematic oomph thanks to those tightly framed images that convey cartloads of emotion with every quivering lip.

Sadly, the same cannot be said for the whole political framework of Les Mis?rables, a book that dared look at post-Revolution France with a damning critical eye. Unable to condense a century worth of social history into a hummable verse, neither the musical nor the movie are able to animate the story of the 1832 June Rebellion, or its significance to the evolution of the democratic ideal.

Sure, we get a lot of handsome young men rising up in heroic profile to stand atop barricades chanting slogans of social justice and freedom. But their sacrifice never finds an emotional anchor of meaning.

In some ways, the whole thing feels like an endless and largely monotonous parade of rotting pomp and tragic circumstance. All that singing could be interpreted as tuneful whining and whingeing, and no matter how catchy the tune, it?s still taxing to the psyche to watch such self-indulgent, unrelenting unhappiness played for spectacle.

What saves Hooper?s hulking vessel from sinking in a contrived sea of melancholy are the solid performances from every player onscreen.

Jackman is the oak-like main mast who gives the ship its emotional engine. Not only is his voice up to the challenge of the score, his thespian talent fills every crevice of the screen and makes you weep with empathy.

Crowe?s gruff vocals provide the perfect counterpoint to Jackman?s pristine notes, ensuring a driving masculine dynamic at all times, and Seyfried?s soprano rings high and clear ? offering an aural glimmer of love and hope.

Hathaway is the problematic variable because her droopy screen presence and goody-two-shoes persona could have rendered Fantine a mopey sop. Yet, even she prevails over the repetitive score to belt out a few killer verses.

Like the movie as a whole, these runs are dripping with sentiment ? much of it glazed and over-romanticized to exaggerate the noble cause of social justice, but thanks to Jackman and those close-ups, Hooper gives Les Mis?rables a real sense of soul and turns a potential dog into a fluffy French poodle with a brain as well as a fancy haircut.

CAPSULE REVIEW: Les Miserables ? Director Tom Hooper (The King?s Speech) brings? the musical adaptation of Victor Hugo?s novel to the big screen with emotionally palpable success thanks to an Oscar-worthy performance from Hugh Jackman and a tool chest full of cinematic goodies. From real world location shooting to well-timed close-ups of each character at their particular climax, the filmic elements bring a whole new dimension to the monotonous and grotesquely sentimental score. Yet, for all the emotional success, the historical and political sides of Hugo?s rich tale of social justice feel sadly undeveloped. Then again, no one goes to the movies for a history lesson. We go for the grand catharsis ? and Les Miserables unlaces its corset to fill its lungs and howl with dramatic abandon. Rating: Four stars out of five. ? Katherine Monk
