Little Ms. Bossy: Summer Hit List: Food & Drink

I don't know if you've noticed, but we love to eat and drink over here in the Bossy-Melear household. And that goes double when we're in foreign countries. Wherever we go we try to partake of all the local specialties, wander the aisles of grocery stores, and spy on the natives at neighboring tables to see what they're having. Then we have long discussions/Google searches of how to incorporate our favorites once we're back home. I thought you might like to know what made our list this summer:
  • Chocolate sprinkled on cappuccino: With the amount of Nespresso that gets consumed at our house, I don't know why we never before thought to put chocolate on top. They do it everywhere we went in the UK and most places in Italy. Once we got home we hunted down a shaker (we found one at Sur La Table, similar to this one, exactly like this one that Williams-Sonoma is charging double the price for, lame), and now we get a little sprinkle of decadent chocolate with every cup!
  • Ros?: In Aix-en-Provence it felt like every person in every restaurant was drinking ros?. I wasn't sure about it (I think I was associating it with the Franzia of my youth), but it turned out to be the most light, refreshing summer drink. Plus, there are lots of delicious choices in the $10 range?can't beat that! To keep it cold, lots of outdoor caf?s in Aix use plastic wine chiller bags. Wouldn't these be perfect for picnics?
  • Pecorino al forno with honey: We first discovered this last summer on our honeymoon: pecorino cheese, on bread or with bread, melted in the oven and then drizzled with honey and cracked pepper. Maybe the best thing I've ever eaten. It's tricky to reproduce it here because the kind of pecorino usually found in grocery stores is aged. The key is to look for "pecorino fresco." We're lucky enough to have Central Market and their wall of cheese nearby, which is probably why we got too excited and bought an entire (smallish) wheel of the stuff. Who could blame us?
  • Potato chips: When you order a glass of wine or a Negroni in Tuscany, more often than not you are served a bowl of potato chips with it. At first we thought it was bizarre (if not a little trashy), but now we're sold. We even learned how to say "potato chips" in Italian for the rare occasions we had to ask for them ("patatine fritte," if you're wondering). Back home, classic Utz chips do the job just fine.

We could not be happier to be home after so long away, but it's good to have a little taste of vacation on hand when needed. What delicious things are you eating and drinking this summer?

India rates on hold, growth to slow further

MUMBAI, India (AP) ? India's central bank is keeping interest rates unchanged even as it warns that a weak monsoon and global risks will drive down economic growth faster than anticipated.

The Reserve Bank of India on Tuesday slashed its growth forecast for the fiscal year ending in March 2013 to 6.5 percent from an earlier projection of 7.3 percent. It also said inflation for the fiscal year will be 7.0 percent, up from its April forecast of 6.5 percent.

The bank says its primary focus remains "inflation control." It says cutting rates now will only aggravate inflation without "necessarily stimulating growth."

It left the key repo rate unchanged at 8.0 percent.

India's economy has been slowing for four quarters now, hitting a nine-year low of 5.3 percent in the quarter ended March.

Ex-sceptic - Humans cause warming

A formerly sceptical climate scientist says human activity is causing the Earth to warm, as a new study confirms earlier results on rising temperatures.

In a US newspaper opinion piece, Prof Richard Muller says: "Call me a converted sceptic."

Muller leads the Berkeley Earth Project, which is using new methods and some new data to investigate the claims made by other climate researchers.

Their latest study confirms the warming trend seen by other groups.

The project received funds from sources that back organisations lobbying against action on climate change.

Their latest study, released early on Monday (GMT), concludes that the average temperature of the Earth's land has risen by 1.5C (2.7F) over the past 250 years.

?Start Quote

I'm now going a step further: Humans are almost entirely the cause?

End Quote Prof Richard Mueller University of California, Berkeley

The team argues that the good correspondence between the new temperature record and historical data on CO2 emissions suggests human activity is "the most straightforward explanation" for the warming.

The paper reiterates the finding that the land surface temperature has risen 0.9C just in the last 50 years.

In a piece authored for the New York Times, Prof Muller, from the University of California, Berkeley, said: "Three years ago I identified problems in previous climate studies that, in my mind, threw doubt on the very existence of global warming.

"Last year, following an intensive research effort involving a dozen scientists, I concluded that global warming was real and that the prior estimates of the rate of warming were correct. I'm now going a step further: Humans are almost entirely the cause."

When establishing the project, Prof Muller had been concerned by claims that established teams of climate researchers had not been entirely open with their data.

He gathered a team of 10 scientists, mostly physicists, including such luminaries as Saul Perlmutter, winner of this year's Nobel Physics Prize for research showing the Universe's expansion is accelerating.

Funding came from a number of sources, including charitable foundations maintained by the Koch brothers, billionaire US industrialists who have also donated large sums to organisations lobbying against acceptance of man-made global warming.

On a different page

However, one collaborator on the previous tranche of Berkeley Earth project papers, Judith Curry of the Georgia Institute of Technology, declined to be included as an author on the latest one.

Commenting on the paper, Prof Curry said: "Their latest paper on the 250-year record concludes that the best explanation for the observed warming is greenhouse gas emissions. Their analysis is way oversimplistic and not at all convincing in my opinion."

She also told the New York Times: "I was invited to be a co-author on the new paper. I declined. I gave them my review of the paper, which was highly critical. I don't think this new paper adds anything to our understanding of attribution of the warming."

The Berkeley Earth project studies have not yet been published in peer reviewed scientific journals, but the team has submitted them to the Journal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres.

Prof Michael Mann, director of the Earth Science System Center at Penn State University, said that there was "a certain ironic satisfaction" in seeing a study funded by the Koch Brothers "demonstrate what scientists have known with some degree of confidence for nearly two decades: that the globe is indeed warming, and that this warming can only be explained by human-caused increases in greenhouse gas concentrations".

Prof Muller, meanwhile, describes his own change in standpoint as "a total turnaround".

He explained: "These findings are stronger than those of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change [IPCC], the United Nations group that defines the scientific and diplomatic consensus on global warming."

The University of California physics professor added: "I hope that the Berkeley Earth analysis will help settle the scientific debate regarding global warming and its human causes.

"Then comes the difficult part: agreeing across the political and diplomatic spectrum about what can and should be done."

Sceptical blogger Anthony Watts criticised elements of the team's findings, releasing details of his own analysis which claims to show "spurious doubling" in US temperature trends over recent decades.

Kidney cancer vaccine successful in clinical trials

ScienceDaily (July 27, 2012) ? Researchers at the University of T?bingen and immatics biotechnologies GmbH -- a start-up by T?bingen scientists -- have published the results of two clinical studies using the kidney-cancer vaccine IMA901 in the latest edition of Nature Medicine.

IMA901 is used to treat patients with cancer of the kidneys. It is composed of ten synthetic tumor-associated peptides (TUMAPs), which activate the body's own killer T-cells against the tumor. Unlike chemotherapy, this process targets the body's immune responses and mobilizes them to attack the cancer. The studies show that this active immunization against cancer can be successful and extend the life of a patient for longer than even the latest chemotherapy techniques -- with far fewer side-effects.

Prof. Dr. Hans-Georg Rammensee, head of Immunology at the University of T?bingen and co-founder of immatics biotechnologies, says: "This work is a milestone in the development of cancer immune therapies. The principle applied here -- of active immunization against cancer antigens previously identified in cancer cells -- can be used against practically all types of cancer. University of T?bingen researchers have published similarly successful clinical studies in the case of bowel cancer, also in collaboration with immatics, and prostate cancer. Immatics is currently carrying out studies on treatments for glioblastoma [a common and malignant brain tumor] and further studies for treating liver cancer and ovarian carcinoma are in the pipeline."

Prof. Dr. Arnulf Stenzl, head of Urology at the University Hospitals, who supervised the clinical studies, explains: "All of the medications previously used have brought about a clear improvement in reducing tumor growth in cancer of the kidneys, but they did not lead to the desired extension of the patient's life and certainly did not cure the patient. So from the clinical point of view, the further development by immatics of active immunization in combination with a low dose of one-off chemotherapy is a significant step in the treatment of kidney cell carcinoma -- and possibly other malignant tumors as well."

One particular aspect of this kidney cancer study is its uniquely exhaustive analysis of the immune response against the cancer antigens -- done with the help of biomarkers. In particular, the characteristics of the white blood cells involved were precisely detailed during the course of the immunization. Complex logistics were required to get these cells frozen and transported to T?bingen from study centers all over Europe, while ensuring they were in a fit state to be analyzed.

The study shows that in kidney-cancer patients with documented T-cell reactions against two or more tumor-associated peptides, the immune reaction and clinical progress were clearly linked. That confirms the hypothesis that cancer treatments can be further developed by broadly activating the immune system against various target structures on the surface of the tumor. The article also describes the researchers' aims of identifying biomarkers which could help give a more accurate prediction of how long certain groups of patients may live after being treated with IMA901. An analysis of more than 300 potential biomarkers turned up a number of them which are currently being tested in a new phase-3 study by immatics for their ability to show an immune response and the extension of patient life after treatment with IMA901.

The Latest On Factors Of NLP Experiments | So Ask Me

Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) might be something that you learned about by reading a book, viewing a video or seeing something on the Internet. NLP is what many leading authorities of self-improvement, like Anthony Robbins, take advantage of in their lessons and seminars.

You can spend a really long time studying NLP, although it doesn?t take very long to comprehend some decent methods and begin putting them to use. Following are some of the ways that you can take advantage of Neuro Linguistic Programming.

When you learn NLP techniques, anchoring is one of the foundational components. Anchoring is about focusing on two different images or ideas within your mind. In psychology, the famous psychologist Pavlov made his dogs salivate by ringing a bell ? this is essentially the same technique. He got the dogs to anchor the sound of the bell with food. This same principle also applies to humans, and we subconsciously anchor all kinds of things. This is the root of many phobias and uncomfortable emotions. If, for example, you have a fear of trees because as a child you fell out of one. If possible, try to reinvent the memory of the incident with the trees by replacing the old memory was something much more desirable instead. It is possible to benefit from NLP anchoring once you know the method well. When you want to learn about the way your senses work, Neuro Linguistic Programming can teach you quite a lot. It also helps us understand that some people use some senses more than others. Most people who identify as auditory, visual or kinesthetic people (which means that they rely mostly on their senses of hearing, sight or touch). Observation alone can tell you which sort of these a person may be. This is quite helpful when it comes to establishing a rapport with that person. For example, when talking to a visual person, you should say something like ?I see? to indicate you understand him. If he or she was an auditory person, you would say, ?I hear you? instead. Pop over to www.intelli-co.com for excellent tips.

A lot of NLP maneuvers involve the way you interact with people, either on a business or a personal level. When you gain knowledge of Neuro Linguistic Programming, you will see that questions are a plus. To establish the most excellent questions for any occasion, you should first find out all that you can about the people you will be directing your attention toward. This could be one person you?ve just met, or it could be a target market consisting of many people.

Once you identify a person?s treasures and desires, then you can ask them questions that might affect their beliefs. If, for example, you are trying to sell a vehicle to a business person, you may want to ask them how they would feel about driving that car into work every day and then they will start to imagine it.

You can use NLP for selling things, improving yourself and a number of other things. People who wish to overcome their fears, sales trainers and even counselors take advantage of it. You should look into this matter, as this article has only offered us limited room to talk about the different ways that you can utilize NLP. You will discover that there are actually quite a few people who can enhance their lives by practicing the notion of Neuro Linguistic Programming.

How Can I Increase Penis Size, Width and Sexual Power Naturally ...

Nowadays, many men are unsatisfied with the size of their specific organ. Moreover, the size of the male organ plays an important role when it comes to sexual power. In addition, it is also an important issue for females, since some female would feel more satisfied with larger and broader male organ. However, most of the men seek for a method to increase penis size and width and sexual power only to impress their partner in the bed. Nevertheless, there are several methods to increase the urge for intimacy and size of the male reproductive organ. And, one of the cheapest ways is herbal products to do it. Besides, according to studies, most of the males feel embarrassed because of the size of their organ. But, it is found that only 5 percent of the world male population is having sized reproductive organ. So, there is no reason for any male to feel embarrassed about the size of his organ, because most of the males do not posses satisfactory size.

Nevertheless, there are some very simple methods that can increase penis size and width and sexual power. Moreover, it is an important matter for most males, particularly those who are on their way to start a relationship. However, penis size and width and sexual power depend on various physical factors. But, more importantly it depends on the adequate blood circulation towards male genital. Furthermore, the tissues that surround the male organ acts as vessels and, they trap the blood in themselves, which helps male organ to become large. In addition, muscles around the genital should be strong enough, because weak muscles could become saggy, due to which the male organ would look small. Nonetheless, proper blood flow is essential to nourish every part of the body, including reproductive organ. So, without adequate flow of blood in specific area might reduce the size and broadness of male organ.

Leave Your Old Package Behind And Save Money On Auto Insurance

When obtaining auto insurance be sure to include anyone that would be likely to drive your vehicle. If someone that isn?t covered on your insurance crashes your car, the insurance company has no liability to pay a claim on said accident. Additionally, you could be held responsible for damages done by someone else who was driving your vehicle.

Take a class on safe and defensive driving to save money on your premiums. The more knowledge you have, the safer a driver you can be. Insurance companies sometimes offer discounts if you take classes that can make you a safer driver. Besides the savings on your premiums, it?s always a good idea to learn how to drive safely.

When you are shopping for car insurance be sure to calculate all of the costs before taking the policy. You may be paying higher premiums for less coverage if you do not take the time to find out exactly what it is that you are paying for. Keep the deductibles in mind as you are calculating the cost.

One of the best things that you can do to get cheaper auto insurance is decrease your annual mileage. Most insurance companies will give you a quote based on 12,000 miles a year. If you can work something out by decreasing this number your insurance premium should go down as well.

Car insurance costs can be cut down if you know what to do. Make sure that your car falls into the low risk category, you add a spouse when you can, tell the insurance company that you have children, and keep a clean driving record. If you are over 25 years old your premiums will go down as well.

Be careful about what kind of repairs your insurance will cover. Some insurances send their customers to specific shops, which might cut costs by using cheap parts or not replacing everything that needs to be. When you choose an insurance, make sure they will pay for repairs and let you choose where you will get your car fixed. Or get a lifetime guarantee on the work performed.

Insuring a young driver can be a harrowing ? and expensive! ? proposition. Many insurance companies offer ?good student? discounts for young drivers; these should be taken advantage of whenever possible. Insurers reason that a dedicated student who excels in his or her classes is more likely to be a cautious driver. Smart insurance customers will cash in on this reasoning.

Keep your insurance budget in mind when you are actually purchasing your car. Even if you are not out looking to purchasing a new vehicle, if you ever are, keep this in mind. Certain automobiles are much more costly to insure than others. That sports car could end up costing you loads of money even years after its purchase.

If you want to save even more money, check into getting all your insurance needs through the same company. Most insurance companies will offer a discount on their insurance if you have more than one policy with them, such as your homeowner?s insurance or renters? insurance. This can reduce your rates.

Every state has specific legal requirements for minimum auto insurance. Property damage and bodily injury liability are the usual requirements. Ensuring that a driver?s insurance meets these requirements is the driver?s responsibility, not the insurance company?s. Wise drivers research their local insurance laws and learn their legal minimums, to ensure that they get proper coverage.

Research the auto insurer you plan to get coverage through. Researching what others have to say online about the company may save you time and money. You may have found a great low cost insurance policy, but if the company is known for hassling customers who file a claim, you could have larger money headaches down the road with them.

When considering auto insurance, remember to look for your available discounts. Did you attend college? That could mean a discount. Do you have a car alarm? Another discount may be available. Remember to ask your agent about what discounts are available so that you can take advantage of the cost savings!

When it?s time for you to renew your auto insurance policy, ask your agent to tell you about any discounts that are offered by the insurer. There might be new discounts available to you at this time, and unless you ask, you might miss the opportunity to take advantage of those cost savings.

Even though you might see it as a sign of being a good friend to someone, do not allow anyone else to drive your car that is not on your policy. If they get into an accident, you will be forced to pay a hefty deductible and it will negatively affect your record. The only exception, is if their insurance fully covers them and your car while they are driving it.

As you age, check with your auto insurance company about discounts. If you have a long history of safe driving habits, your age might qualify you for further rate reductions. Most insurance companies have a sweet spot around fifty five to seventy years of age for age-related discounts on their policies.

Have an alarm, immobilizer or tracker installed in your car. Reducing the risk of theft saves money for everyone. Having an alarm, immobilizer, or tracker installed in your car can save you some grief and a bit of money on your car insurance policy. Check to make sure that your provider offers discounts for having it installed first.

As was mentioned earlier in this article, everyone who owns a car needs to buy quality auto insurance. When shopping around for an auto insurance policy, it is important to educate yourself on the different types of policies available so that you can choose wisely and make a good decision. Apply the advice from this article to help you find the perfect auto insurance.

Nick Diaz Update: Will Return, Wants Anderson Silva

Like a passing case of the munchies, UFC welterweight contender Nick Diaz's plans to retire seem to have faded, and taking the place of that retirement is a burning desire to face UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva.? All this is according to his longtime coach, Cesar Gracie, who posted a lengthy statement on the matter over at GracieFighter.

It was only just February when Diaz purportedly turned his back on the sport, a move prompted by his controversial unanimous decision loss to Carlos Condit at UFC 143.??The defeat?came?after a five-round scrap for the UFC Interim Welterweight Championship title, and the bout?saw Condit playing "hit and run" while the Stockton native followed him around and?hurled insults.? Soon after,?it was revealed that?Diaz had tested positive for?marijuana metabolites in a post-fight urinalysis, and the subsequent year-long suspension levied upon him appeared to be the icing on the retirement cake.

Said Gracie:

For the last couple months I've watched Nick begin to frequent the gym more and more.? He's training harder now than he has for many of his fights.? It was obvious that training and fighting is in his DNA.? It is who he is.

This week we had a great talk and he made it clear to me that he is ready to get back in the cage.? Nick Diaz will return.

With interim champ Condit destined to face UFC welterweight champ Georges St. Pierre at UFC 154 in November, who is there for Diaz - an elite,?top-level fighter -?to face that's worthwhile?

As far as future opponents, Nick has stated that he would like to take fights "that matter".? Since GSP will be fighting Condit, he has to look elsewhere.? He will respectfully ask for a fight with Anderson Silva, a fighter he respects and would like to challenge.

Silva's camp has been speaking of a fight with GSP, possibly even at a catchweight.? Nick will take that fight in a minute but has told me that should Silva decide not to drop at all, he will move up to 185lbs to face the Champ.

And there you have it.? Unfortunately, unless Diaz (or, more aptly, his attorneys) can figure out a way around his suspension, ain't nothin' going down 'till February, 2013.? Remember kids, dope is for dopes.? Don't be a dope!

Jim Genia tweets here and wrote this book.? Come at me, bro.

Apple iPhone sales dip as new product launch nears

Anticipation for the latest and greatest model of Apple Inc.?s popular iPhone has slowed sales on its existing products, Bloomberg reports.

Apple posted its slowest sales and profit growth in more than two years as sales of iPhones slid in the third quarter compared to prior periods.

A similar slowdown happened last year ahead of the release of the iPhone 4S as company profits fell short of analyst? estimates for the first time since 2003.

Apple hasn?t said when it will unveil a new iPhone, and has given no details about plans for the product. But industry sources say Apple is preparing to overhaul the look of the iPhone and has placed orders with suppliers for screens that are bigger than the phone?s current 3.5-inch screen.

Cupertino, Calif.-based Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) has more than 350 retail stores worldwide, including two in San Antonio.

Mike Lynn Dead: Former Vikings GM Dies At 76

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) ? Mike Lynn, the longtime Minnesota Vikings executive who made the ill-fated trade with Dallas for Herschel Walker, has died. He was 76.

The Vikings confirmed Lynn's death Saturday with a statement on the team website. Lynn served as the team's general manager from 1975 to 1990.

He is best remembered for one of the most lopsided trades in NFL history. The Vikings sent five players and seven draft picks to the Cowboys in 1989 for Walker, the running back Lynn considered the missing link to a Super Bowl run.

Walker never panned out in Minnesota and Dallas used the riches of players and picks to lay the groundwork for three Super Bowl wins in the 1990s.

"The Vikings are deeply saddened by the passing of Mike Lynn," the team wrote in a statement on their website. "He was instrumental of the success of the Vikings for many years. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Lynn family at this difficult time."

The Vikings did not cite a cause of death, but Lynn was reportedly in failing health for several years.

Known as a hard-nosed negotiator and one of the more colorful executives in Twin Cities sports history, Lynn rose through the Vikings' ranks under former owner Max Winter.

Lynn helped organize a front office that turned the Vikings into a consistent playoff contender that drafted and developed three Hall of Famers ? Randall McDaniel, Chris Doleman and John Randle, an undrafted rookie free agent. Lynn also played a big role in drafting several future Pro Bowlers, including Joey Browner and Keith Millard, and claiming Cris Carter, a troublemaker in Philadelphia who blossomed into one of the best receivers of his era in Minnesota, off waivers.

He also negotiated a deal with Max Winter that brought him 10 percent of the suite revenue from all Metrodome events over the life of the building, reaping a financial windfall for decades even after he left the team.

"RIP Mike Lynn," Twins president Dave St. Peter wrote on Twitter. "Few, if any, front office execs in Minn. sports history were more bold, colorful or controversial."

Lynn and the Vikings were always haunted by the decision to go all-in for Walker, a former Heisman Trophy winner and one of the greatest players in college football history who was acquired in the blockbuster midseason deal in 1989.

Walker rushed for 1,514 yards and five touchdowns in 1988, his third season with the Cowboys after coming to the NFL from the USFL. Lynn and the Vikings felt all that was preventing them from making a run at the Super Bowl was a stud running back, so they went after Walker.

The Vikings received Walker and four draft picks for linebackers Jesse Solomon and David Howard, running back Darrin Nelson, cornerback Issiac Holt, defensive end David Howard and a staggering seven draft picks, including three first-rounders and two second-rounders.

Cowboys coach Jimmy Johnson used the incredible bounty to wheel and deal through three drafts, landing stars Emmitt Smith, Darren Woodson and Russell Maryland to help construct the framework of the team that dominated the early 1990s.

Walker had a dazzling debut, rushing for 148 yards against Green Bay. But that was by far the highlight of his time in Minnesota. He lasted just two more seasons with the Vikings before moving on to Philadelphia.

In Colorado shooting, some families get worst news

Barry Gutierrez / AP

Tom Sullivan holds a photograph of his son, Alex Sullivan, as he pleads with the media to help him find his son, outside Gateway High School Friday in Aurora, Colo.

By Elizabeth Chuck, NBC News

Updated at 9:20 p.m. ET: Alex Sullivan was supposed to be celebrating his 27th birthday Friday, beginning with a midnight screening of "Batman: The Dark Knight Rises" in Aurora, Colo.

"Oh man one hour till the movie and its going to be the best BIRTHDAY ever," he tweeted before heading to the theater where a black-clad gunman wearing body armor opened fire, killing 12 people and injuring 58.

Late Friday, his family got confirmation of what they most dreaded: He was among the dead.

In Colorado and across the country, friends and family members of missing moviegoers anxiously awaited word on their loved ones, hoping for good news but fearing the worst.

The final bodies were removed from the theater a little after 5 p.m. Friday, Aurora police chief Dan Oates said at a news conference. He said police met with about 70 family members and friends to give an accounting of bodies that had been identified.

Police said families of the dead were being notified Friday night.

Late Friday, Sullivan's family said in a statement that he had been killed, the Denver Post and The Associated Press reported. Heart-wrenching photographs taken earlier Friday showed Sullivan's father, Tom, grieving and pleading for information about his son.?

"We're still hoping that he's missing somewhere and that they missed him at the hospital," Jim Schwab, Sullivan's cousin, told The Denver Post?earlier Friday from his Rochester, N.Y., home, where he was gathered with 20 of Sullivan's other relatives.

One victim, a 24-year-old aspiring sportcaster named Jessica Ghawi, was identified to the public by her brother.

Shooting victim Marcus Weaver talks with MSNBC's Chris Jansing about the injuries he sustained during the Aurora shooting, and describes how he was forced to leave his injured friend behind.

As chaos from the rampage died down and wounded victims were transported to hospitals, Sullivan's family and friends waited for?word from him?-- but they heard nothing.

Armed with a photo of his son, Tom Sullivan, Alex's dad, went to Gateway High School, which the town?has turned into a makeshift crisis center.

"Find my son!" he yelled from the parking lot, reported Bloomberg News.

Matt McQuinn, who went to the premiere with his girlfriend, was also missing, his stepmother?Stacie McQuinn told NBC News by phone from her home in Springfield, Ohio.

?It?s eating at me -- the unknown is eating at me -- but I have my Lord to lean on I know he?s going to get us through this,? she said.

She said Matt?s mother, Jerri Jackson, had flown from Ohio to Denver to try to get more information.

McQuinn's girlfriend, Samantha Yowler, underwent surgery after taking a bullet to her leg, according to The Denver Post. She was believed to be in fair condition.

After barely escaping a mall shooting last month, aspiring sports reporter Jessica Ghawi did not survive the theater shooting. Her brother spoke to reporters about her remarkable spirit. NBC's Kristen Dahlgren reports.

Rosemary Ratcliff was also waiting to hear from her son. She told The New York Times?that she believes her son Abdullah, 17, went to the midnight show.

"I haven't heard from him, and none of his friends are picking up their phones," she told The Times from Gateway High School.

In Crystal Lake, Ill., another family spent Friday making desperate phone calls about their son.

John Larimer, who is stationed with the U.S. Navy in Aurora, was in the theater last night, his dad told The Chicago Sun-Times.

"We have literally been calling for 15 hours," his father, Scott Larimer, told The Sun-Times from his home in Crystal Lake.???We cannot get any help from the military, the police, the hospitals, the Red Cross. ... We cannot get a single answer if he is alive or dead. ... We are more than frantic.?

Defense officials told NBC News one sailor was missing and presumed dead in the shooting spree. Another sailor and two airmen were wounded in the shooting rampage. The names of the missing and injured were not released.

Those who made it out of the movie described a scene of confusion when the alleged gunman, identified as 24-year-old James Eagan Holmes, appeared at the front of the theater at 12:39 a.m.?

"He shot the ceiling and then "he threw in the gas can, and then I knew it was real," witness Jennifer Seeger told TODAY.

Tanner Coon, who was in the theater with a friend and the friend's 12-year-old brother, said the shooter fired about 20 rounds and then paused, giving him time to escape.

"I slipped on some blood and landed on a lady. I shook her and said, 'We need to go.' There was no response, so I presume she was dead," he said.

Aurora is a suburb less than 10 miles east of Denver, with a population of about 333,000 people,?just 15 miles?northeast of? Columbine High School, seen of the 1999 massacre in which two gunmen killed 12 fellow students and a teacher and wounded 26 others before taking their own lives.

The Red Cross has set up a Safe and Well list where victims can list themselves to let their relatives know they're alive. You can view the list here.

DirecTV, Viacom fight to draw in channel punch-out

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Viacom and DirecTV fought a bruising bout over fees to a draw Friday and agreed to a long-term deal that ended a 10-day channel blackout.

Their new deal restored MTV, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon and other channels to 20 million DirecTV customers and ensured those channels will be available to subscribers on computers and mobile devices in the coming months.

Fans on Twitter expressed relief.

According to terms shared by both sides on Friday, DirecTV Group Inc. will pay about 20 percent more to carry Viacom Inc. channels on satellite TV lineups. That works out to about $600 million in the first year of a seven-year deal. The companies agreed to annual single-digit percentage increases in subsequent years.

DirecTV was able to save itself about $500 million over the entire term by not taking the premium pay TV channel Epix. It said it also was able to send a message that it won't roll over every time a media company threatens to pull channels over fees.

"They realized we were not going to capitulate," said Derek Chang, DirecTV's executive vice president of content strategy.

Investors met the outcome with a ho-hum as the deal was largely in line with expectations.

Shares of both companies edged downward Friday in a declining market. Since the dispute resulted in a blackout the evening of July 10, Viacom shares are down 0.9 percent, closing Friday at $46.41, while DirecTV shares are down 0.7 percent, closing at $48.33. Over the same period, the Dow Jones industrial average rose 1.3 percent.

"I'm not going to engage on who was the winner and who was the loser," said Todd Juenger, an analyst with Bernstein Research. "What we've learned is the fair value of Viacom services, fully tested and vetted in a real marketplace negotiation."

By eking out a large fee increase, Viacom said DirecTV is now paying a rate that is more in line with that of other distributors.

DirecTV's Chang even acknowledged that it had been paying significantly less than competitors for Viacom channels because the deal that just expired had been locked in seven years ago.

Viacom had argued that its networks account for 20 percent of what DirecTV subscribers are watching but cost DirecTV just 5 percent of its overall programming expense. Under the new deal, the Viacom fees will come out to 6 percent.

"It was important to get fair value for our networks," Viacom spokesman Carl Folta said. "We are still one of the most efficient programmers in their bouquet."

By refusing to add Epix to its premium pay TV channel stable, DirecTV was able to save itself a big fixed cost over its entire subscriber base, as the flat fee would have been charged no matter how many subscribers choose to pay more for Epix, a movie channel that is half owned by Viacom.

Media companies typically try to sell rights to their channels as a package, so that fledgling channels are bundled with those already in high demand. Adding Epix to DirecTV would have been a big win for Viacom, as it's now carried by only a handful of distributors, including rival satellite TV provider Dish Network Corp. But that was seen as unlikely, partly because Epix movies are available to Netflix subscribers 90 days after debuting on TV and the channel might have been hard to sell to customers.

The damage from the blackout to both sides was real but not permanent.

DirecTV spokesman Darris Gringeri said the company lost subscribers because of the dispute, "but against our subscriber base, it was not a significant number."

Viacom lost out on 10 days' worth of fees from DirecTV ? roughly $14 million ? and took a short-term audience hit that will cost the company advertising revenue.

Both sides suffered brand damage ? Viacom because it was tagged for being a root cause of rising monthly TV bills, and DirecTV for not giving subscribers what they paid for. Even Comedy Central's Jon Stewart slammed network parent Viacom for acting like China in pulling some shows from the Internet as part of the dispute, hurting people who weren't DirecTV subscribers.

But the fight was short enough to forget about and move on. Plenty of disputes have lasted just a heartbeat ? like ABC's 15-minute blackout of the Oscars to Cablevision subscribers in March 2010. Others have dragged on for months.

"It was fortunate they were able to resolve it before the back and forth got any worse than it did," Barclays analyst Anthony DiClemente said.

DiClemente said the relatively quick resolution boded well for an end to AMC Networks Inc.'s continuing dispute with Dish, which has gone on since July 1.

Florida investigators renew search for Amy Patterson

MADISON COUNTY, AL (WAFF)- Investigators in Florida will renew the search for a missing Madison County woman.

Amy Patterson was last seen a year ago in Lee County, Florida, where she worked as a teacher.

Her ex-husband, Daniel Proctor, is a suspect in her disappearance but has never been charged.

Instead, he's in the Madison County Jail on theft charges.

Meanwhile, Patterson's mother has raised $10,000 in reward money for Crime Stoppers in Florida.

Ladonna "Kay" Salehi won't believe her daughter is dead until there's proof of it.

"They keep telling me, 'Hey, Mom. She's dead. We got to accept that.' But I can't accept that."

These days, Salehi still gazes at old pictures of Patterson growing up, her daughter's teacher pin now attached securely next to her heart.

"She contributed so much to this family. And to have that piece gone, they all seem sort of adrift," she said.

Investigators at the Lee County Sheriff's Office in Florida believe Patterson was a victim of domestic homicide.

Her ex-husband, Proctor, had a violent past against his former wife.

He was charged with assault against Patterson in 1994 - something her mother never forgot.

"Danny hasn't come forward with anything. He hasn't said whether he's heard where she is, so that clears the hope that maybe she did run away," said Salehi. "Maybe she realized how bad off the situation really was and how controlling he had become."

On Friday, Lee County investigators will post a billboard and new photos of Patterson in a last-ditch effort to find her, and Salehi will track every detail.

"I just turned 61. And I certainly don't want to die not knowing what happened to my daughter," she said.

Proctor remains in the Madison County Jail with no ability to bond out.

His trial date on auto and gun theft charges has not been set.

Business Debt Negotiation - Why the Big Mystery?

12:00 AM By Article Directory

'; div.innerHTML = summary; } //]]> Business Debt Negotiation - Why the Big Mystery? Business Debt Negotiation - Why the Big Mystery?

When cash flow becomes inadequate, you need to stop the bleeding. You have to stop your business's lifeblood from draining away. And if you can't immediately find a new transfusion source, it's essential to cauterize the wound.

An effective way to do this is to delay payment of non-essential accounts. This is not likely to go down well. Suppliers will become angry and frustrated, which is understandable. They might even be in the same boat as you. But they'll be even more upset if you go out of business and leave them with nothing. You have to let them know what's going on and show them how you are working in their best interests.

Once your business is stabilized you should have a better handle on its blood supply. This comes from increased sales, or from additional loan or investment capital. And at this point you will know enough and have enough spare cash to start making deals with creditors. How you deal with them will depend on your prospects and how much cash is available.

The business debt settlement process can be very straightforward. Given the alternatives, it benefits both your business and your suppliers. The trouble is, so few lawyers or accountants know much about it. An across-the-board debt settlement is known as a workout. It is standard practice within the turnaround management community, which typically works with troubled big businesses. But it is relatively unknown amongst legal and financial professionals who provide service to small to medium sized companies.

Why is this process such a mystery? Why are small business owners commonly advised to file for Chapter 7 bankruptcy liquidation, when a better alternative may present itself? Part of this might be that debt negotiation and deal making are foreign concepts to many professionals. It wasn't part of their college curriculum and there's little understanding of it. Possibly, for this reason, they don't want to consider or discuss it with clients.

From your perspective, it may feel easier to heed such advice and succumb to a tried and true legal remedy - bankruptcy - than to take the more entrepreneurial approach of facing up to the barriers and challenges to your business.

The fact is, of you are an effective business owner, you know how to sell. Ultimately, you may have to sell debt settlement solutions to your company's creditors. The trouble is, there are so few legal and financial professionals with this mindset. They tend to favor established cook-book remedies. If anything, the legal profession prefers a simple fight to a potentially complex negotiation. And accountants may be hard to convince that your listing of balance sheet liabilities can be fundamentally reduced in short order.

If you are taken to hospital after an accident, the medical staff doesn't tell you that they've no idea of how to stem the blood flow. Or that they have established Kevorkian procedures to make you die, rather than get you well. And that you shouldn't challenge their opinion because they know best and, anyway, they wouldn't know how to save you. As well, effective treatment with any alternative therapy would be "too difficult to consider." Now, that scenario is ridiculous. But it represents the kind of advice that's given every day to the owners of sick companies.

It's about time that more small to medium sized business professional service providers became familiar with the benefits of debt negotiation and workouts. Chapter 7 has its place. But if you are being advised to put your business through bankruptcy liquidation, ask the simple question, "What alternative options are available?" Chances are, you can still save your business.
