Kim Kardashian Fuels Wedding Talk Via Twitter

Perhaps to distract from her ongoing divorce drama - or simply to keep herself in the news - Kim Kardashian Tweeted a photo of herself in a dress last night.

But not just any dress.

Accompanied by the caption "late night fitting," the picture depicts Kim in what is either a wedding dress or a gown intended for followers to believe is a wedding dress. See for yourself:

Kim Kardashian Wedding Gown?

Of course, Kardashian can't legally marry Kanye West - despite talk that the couple really is considering it - until she's officially split from Kris Humphries.

It's either a huge mess for the reality star... or her perfect storm. Under these circumstances, Kim can simply tease fans via Twitter and Facebook and various mysterious quotes without having to commit to anything or go through with what would be another sham of a marriage.

Damn. She's good.

Suspect escapes during Texas girl assault trial

LIBERTY, Texas (AP) ? One of more than a dozen men and boys accused in the repeated sexual assault of an 11-year-old Texas girl escaped from the courthouse during a break in his trial after the child tearfully testified and jurors watched a video showing one of the alleged assaults.

Eric McGowen, 20, is the first of 14 adults to face trial, accused of sexually assaulting the girl during three months in 2010. Six juveniles also are charged in the attacks in Cleveland, a small town about 45 miles northeast of Houston.

Prosecutors and defense attorneys huddled briefly with Judge Mark Morefield after McGowen failed to return to the courtroom in nearby Liberty following an afternoon break Wednesday.

Morefield said a bench warrant had been issued and that the trial would go on without McGowen. Bail was increased from $35,000 to $250,000.

Defense attorney Matthew Poston and prosecutors did not comment on McGowen's disappearance because of a gag order. The Liberty County Sheriff's Office had no update early Thursday on whether the suspect had been found.

McGowen is charged with aggravated sexual assault of a child and faces up to life in prison if convicted.

The girl, testifying using a pseudonym, told jurors about two incidents, one in October 2010 and one the following month, in which she said McGowen and several other men and boys took turns sexually assaulting her while recording the encounters on video.

The girl briefly broke down in tears as jurors were shown a few minutes of video of an alleged October 2010 sexual assault in a house in Cleveland where she and the defendants lived.

The girl, who was 11 at the time, said she was brought into what she described as the "baby room," and that McGowen and others took turns sexually assaulting her. She said the video, which several jurors turned away from, was of her being assaulted by another man charged in the case.

"Did the guys just take turns with you?" prosecutor Joe Warren asked.

"Yes, sir," the girl said.

The girl seemed calm for most of the roughly 1? hours she testified. She mostly gave short answers, often pausing to stare at the floor or ceiling of the courtroom before responding.

She described another alleged sexual assault that November that started in a different Cleveland home and continued at a nearby abandoned trailer.

Asked by Warren if more than 20 males might have assaulted her that day, the girl responded, "Probably."

She also told jurors that McGowen assaulted her with a beer bottle during that incident.

Jurors were shown police photos of used condoms and condom wrappers found inside and outside the house after the alleged November incident.

Poston questioned the girl for about six minutes, asking whether she twice had told police early in the investigation that McGowen had never sexually assaulted her. The girl said she didn't remember saying that.

Prosecutors say the girl was assaulted on at least five occasions from mid-September through early December of 2010.

Eight of the 20 defendants accused in the case have pleaded guilty, including all six juveniles.

Authorities began investigating that December, after one of the girl's friends told a teacher he had seen a cellphone video of her being attacked in an abandoned trailer.

Three people who have pleaded guilty ? two adults and a juvenile who has since turned 18 ? also testified Wednesday.

Isaiah Ross, 22, told jurors he saw McGowen sexually assault the girl with a beer bottle. The other adult, Marcus Porchia, 28, and the teen testified they saw others assault the girl but not McGowen.

Ross and Porchia each received 15-year prison terms. The six juveniles who pleaded guilty each received suspended seven-year prison terms.

The case sparked outrage in the roughly 9,000-strong community of Cleveland. Early in the investigation, some residents suggested the girl was partly responsible because they say she wore makeup, looked older than her age and wasn't properly supervised by her parents, drawing widespread condemnation.

The case also has been complicated by a belief among many in the predominantly black neighborhood where several of the suspects live that the arrests were racially motivated. All of the suspects are black, while the girl is Hispanic.

Warren later showed jurors a video and read a written confession in which McGowen admitted to receiving oral sex from the girl.

"What took place to this girl was nothing better than a pack of animals attacking," Warren said.

On Tuesday, Poston tried but failed to get the confessions thrown out, arguing that police had improperly questioned McGowen.

During his opening statement, Poston told jurors that the video evidence in the case doesn't show McGowen sexually assaulting the girl.

"The truth in this case is not always what it seems," he said.

Most of the adult defendants in the case face charges of aggravated sexual assault of a child, while four face a charge of continuous sexual abuse of a child.

Simple Steps to Cut Risk in the Stock Exchange | Invest in the Markets

Assuming too much risk is a simple way many investors get into trouble. Often driven by the hope make an ?easy? profit, investors both knowingly and unassumingly take on risk? which is ultimately unavoidable. However, what is avoidable is taking on too much risk? the kind of perilousness that can poison your portfolio and cause that gut wrenching feeling that keeps you up at night. So, let?s look at a few simple steps every investor can take to bring balance and peace into their investment portfolios.

Diversify

Diversification is a common word? and if you ask investors, many of them will claim to understand this financial concept quite well. They respond with the traditional sector diversification model which encourages investors to spread their dollars over a variety of sectors. Some go a little further and suggest diversification includes investing in more than one asset within a specific sector. Often these investors are big believers in mutual funds.

Yet for many, diversification becomes a code word for dilution. They simply invest in so many things, in such small quantities, that they dilute their positions? both the good and the bad. They fail to recognize global diversification or diversification over time (i.e. shorter term or longer term investments). Most of all, they often exclude inverse funds that help bring profits to their portfolios when all else is dropping in value.

At the end of the day, investors who have a broad understanding of diversification without diluting their portfolios decrease their risk and provide themselves opportunities to experience profits when all else is falling apart.

Focus on Quality Investments

The temptation is to load up on those investments that did well last year. In fact, I remember sitting down for several years with a financial advisor who would look at the performance of a mutual fund the previous year and if it was in the first quartile, he?d recommend that I shift my money there. Unfortunately, rarely did they continue to perform so well the following year.

Avoid loading up on last year?s winners? or the speculative ?penny? stocks of tomorrow. While diversification may include a speculative stock, it is only a small part of one?s portfolio. In contrast, look for stocks with growing revenues, proven sales, and stable management. These stocks, with their healthy cash flow, are well beyond the risky start-up phase where so many companies flounder for years and even fail.

Plan your Exit Strategy

Knowing when to buy is only part of the challenge. As you know, we suggest the wisest time to buy is when there is a rise in the stock price. Too many investors fail because they buy the dips? only to find themselves holding the investment into what has now become a crater they can?t get out of. I can?t tell you how many times I?ve listened to investors tell me, ?I can?t sell it now? it?s lost too much.? That statement is usually followed by a hopeful claim that it will come back someday.

As stocks rise, so do our point of sale. In other words, we follow the stock up, raising our expectations on the way up? and guarding against any unforeseen downturns. If a stock misses their revenue figures, we are more apt to sell then to hold on with a hope and a prayer. At Invest in the Markets, we?d rather sell our position for a small gain than hold it for any kind of loss. And when we?re up significantly, we don?t want to see those profits evaporate? which they can do all too quickly sometimes.

Investing can be relaxing? and it doesn?t require a gamblers mind. In fact, by putting into practice the simple principles of Capital Preservation, Minimizing Risk, and Maximizing Returns, any household investor can consistently make money without assuming too much risk or getting themselves into financial trouble.

Tribal youth compete in NAYO baseball and softball tournaments ...

By Beverly Bidney

PHILADELPHIA, Miss. ? Eleven Seminole baseball and softball teams traveled to Philadelphia, Miss. to play at the Native American Youth Organization?s (NAYO) annual tournament held from July 19-21.

Categorized by age, about 500 youth on teams from the Seminole, Cherokee, Choctaw, Seneca and Poarch Creek Tribes competed in boys? baseball and girls? fast-pitch softball. About 250 Tribal members attended the tournament to cheer on the Seminole teams.

?It?s a great thing that brings Tribes together,? said Moses Jumper Jr., a founding member of NAYO and a coach at the tournament. ?Relationships have developed and endured through sports, and it has given our young people a sense of unity.?

Established in the 1980s, NAYO unites Native American Tribes across the country for friendly competition through sports. Its founding Tribes (Seminole and Cherokee) and those who joined shortly after (Choctaw, Seneca and Poarch Creek) still form the core of the organization, Jumper said, but all non-member Tribes may participate in the tournaments. Annual tournaments include baseball and softball in the summer and basketball in the spring. The host Tribe sponsors the tournaments, which rotate between Tribes.

?We?ve always been a mainstay because we?ve always seen the importance of it,? Jumper said.

The Seminole sports program, which has a reputation of being one of the top in the Southeast, performed well in this year?s tournament. Results of the Seminole teams included one championship and one third-place finish. The Super Seminoles-Brighton, a girls? 16-18 team, won their division, while the Unconquered Lady Seminoles, a girls? 13-15 team, placed third.

?We aren?t a very big Tribe so we have fewer kids to choose from, but we still do very well,? said Wildcat Jumper, Recreation aide in Brighton and a coach at the tournament. ?When we win, the other Tribes don?t like it too much. They are all working to get better in athletics.?

Wildcat Jumper, who grew up playing in NAYO tournaments, understands the rivalries and sees the Tribal kids figuring it out, too.
?They know they have to work to get better,? he said. ?It?s fun to have a rivalry; it gets them motivated. It can get heated at times, but for the most part it?s a good rivalry.?

This was the first year NAYO included 8 and under teams, who performed well.

?The Recreation Department?s philosophy is the younger you start them, the better off they will be,? said Richard Blankenship, Tribalwide director of Recreation. ?We were happy to see them out there. The Tribe was well represented athletically, socially and showed great parental support. It was a great experience, and I hope to keep the kids active throughout the year.?

Wildcat Jumper coached the youngest girls? team and knows the importance of keeping young kids engaged in the game.

?They took third place, but I?m really proud of them,? he said. ?Those little girls played their hearts out. They had three games in a row and were worn out at the end. I told them it showed they left everything on the field and they should be proud. I?m just glad to see new, young ballplayers coming up.?

Labor strife returns in South Africa's platinum belt

MARIKANA, South Africa (Reuters) - Labor strife returned to South Africa's platinum sector on Monday, derailing London-based Lonmin's efforts to restart mining and fanning fears of a resurgence of the violence that has killed 44 people this month.

Workers blocked colleagues from going down mine shafts and used threats of violence to snarl transport at Lonmin's Marikana mine - where 10 people were killed in a union turf war and police shot dead 34 striking miners.

Last week, South Africa held a week of mourning for those killed in the worst violence of its kind since the end of apartheid, which drew attention to the persistent inequality in pay and living standards in Africa's biggest economy.

The miners' strike has raised fears of cuts in supplies of the precious metal and pushed the spot price of platinum up 10.5 percent over the past fortnight. South Africa has some 80 percent of the world's known platinum reserves.

Suspected police brutality and the problems the government faces in brokering a deal between the rival unions have turned up the heat on the ruling African National Congress and stoked concern about wider labor disputes in the country.

"What we have seen is that if you don't stand up as people, nothing is going to change," said mine worker Thebe Seshanke.

Lonmin, which has suspended most operations for the past two weeks because of a wage strike by 3,000 workers, said only 13 percent of its 28,000-strong workforce had shown up on Monday morning - far too few to restart mining operations.

"There have been incidents of intimidation towards bus drivers overnight as well as intimidation of Eastern's workers this morning, preventing them from coming to work," Lonmin said in a statement, referring to its eastern operations, which had avoided such incidents until now.

Police said there had been reports on Monday of assaults, but gave no details.

Lonmin is the world's third largest producer of platinum, the white metal used in car catalytic converters and jewelry, and accounts for 12 percent of global output. It is losing about 2,500 ounces a day.

The violence stemmed from a bloody turf war, which has been spreading through the sector, between the dominant National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and the small but militant Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU).

DISSATISFACTION WITH NUM

About 2,000 workers, some carrying sticks and whips, gathered on Monday near a hill where police shot dead striking miners on August 16. Five armored police vehicles were parked nearby and a police helicopter had earlier hovered overhead.

The AMCU has tapped a swelling vein of discontent with the NUM, whose leaders are increasingly seen as out of touch and too close to their political ally - the ruling ANC.

The strikers, who are rock driller operators, have been demanding a monthly wage of 12,500 rand ($1,500) for their tough and dangerous job. The company says they get about 9,800 rand with an average monthly bonus of 1,500 rand.

Separately, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate said it was investigating more than 100 cases in which police are suspected of assaulting protesters in custody. About 260 miners appeared in a court near Marikana to face charges ranging from murder and attempted murder to intimidation.

ANC insiders say the situation could undermine President Jacob Zuma's populist appeal and hurt his chances of being re-elected ANC leader in December.

The August 16 shootings, dubbed the "Marikana Massacre" by local media, have hit Zuma's support base, widening the divide between him and his former backers in the ANC Youth League and straining his ties with labor.

In another development Eastern Platinum, a small producer, said its operations near Lonmin's were up and running. The NUM had said earlier that workers there were facing intimidation.

Lonmin has said it may issue new shares to shore up a balance sheet hit by lost output and revenue, and the prospect of further losses - at a time when the whole platinum sector is struggling with soaring power and labor costs and weak demand.

Chain restaurants missing out on ethnic menu opportunities, says ...

CHICAGO, Aug. 27, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --?Consumers may not have the means to travel the world, but that hasn't dampened their desire to experience new ethnic cuisines. Unfortunately, chain restaurants aren't meeting current consumer demand for new foods and flavors. Only a quarter of consumers polled for a recent Technomic survey say they are satisfied with the availability of ethnic offerings at limited-service (23 percent) and full-service (28 percent) chains, which translates into opportunities for operators to differentiate their menus and gain market share with globally-inspired offerings.

[Related INFOGRAPHIC -- Eating Out: Ethnic Restaurants]

"Authenticity is crucial to the ethnic food and beverage purchasing decision," says Executive Vice President Darren Tristano. "Sixty-five percent of consumers say food that tastes authentic is one of the most important factors in deciding which establishment to visit for ethnic foods and beverages. Operators have an opportunity to create innovative and globally inspired menu items reflected through preparation, taste and flavor.? Consumers also say that dishes prepared by someone from that region are given greater credibility as authentic."

To help operators and others aligned with the foodservice industry more effectively understand consumer behavior, definitions, preferences and attitudes towards ethnic flavors and cuisines, Technomic developed the Ethnic Food & Beverage Consumer Trend Report.

Interesting findings include:

  • Three out of four consumers (77 percent) purchase ethnic foods and flavors away from home at least once a month.? The percentage is strongly driven by Asian and Hispanic respondents, with 90 and 88 percent of these consumers, respectively, purchasing ethnic food or flavors away-from-home at least once a month.
  • Data indicates that cuisine does not need to be from another country to be considered ethnic; nearly nine out of 10 consumers consider regional U.S. cuisines such as Cajun (89 percent) and Creole (86 percent) cuisines to be ethnic.
  • 33 percent of consumers strongly agree that there are many ethnic foods they would like to order at restaurants but are not able to find.
  • Southeast Asian flavors are moving into the mainstream with the development of familiar offerings with a flavorful Thai, Vietnamese or Indonesian twist on sauces, dressings and ingredients.

Technomic's Ethnic Food & Beverage Consumer Trend Report examines consumer behavior, attitudes and preferences toward ethnic flavors, foods and beverages based on survey results from 1,500 consumers. The Ethnic Cuisine Trends section provides a comprehensive guide to the trends that continue to shape ethnic flavors and foods. The report also features 20 emerging limited- and full-service restaurants that offer ethnic foods and beverages.

The role of genes in political behavior

ScienceDaily (Aug. 27, 2012) ? Politics and genetics have traditionally been considered non-overlapping fields, but over the past decade it has become clear that genes can influence political behavior, according to a review published online August 27th in Trends in Genetics. This paradigm shift has led to novel insights into why people vary in their political preferences and could have important implications for public policy.

"We're seeing an awakening in the social sciences, and the wall that divided politics and genetics is really starting to fall apart," says review author Peter Hatemi of the University of Sydney. "This is a big advance, because the two fields could inform each other to answer some very complex questions about individual differences in political views."

In the past, social scientists had assumed that political preferences were shaped by social learning and environmental factors, but recent studies suggest that genes also strongly influence political traits. Twin studies show that genes have some influence on why people differ on political issues such as the death penalty, unemployment and abortion. Because this field of research is relatively new, only a handful of genes have been implicated in political ideology and partisanship, voter turnout, and political violence.

Future research, including gene-expression and sequencing studies, may lead to deeper insights into genetic influences on political views and have a greater impact on public policy. "Making the public aware of how their mind works and affects their political behavior is critically important," Hatemi says. "This has real implications for the reduction of discrimination, foreign policy, public health, attitude change and many other political issues."

(AP) ? Neil Armstrong made "one giant leap for mankind" with a small step onto the moon.

He commanded the historic landing of the Apollo 11 spacecraft on the moon July 20, 1969, capping the most daring of the 20th century's scientific expeditions and becoming the first man to walk on the moon.

His first words after the feat are etched in history books and the memories of the spellbound millions who heard them in a live broadcast.

"That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind," Armstrong said. He insisted later that he had said "a'' before man, but said he, too, couldn't hear it in the version that went to the world.

Armstrong, who had bypass surgery earlier this month, died Saturday at age 82 from what his family said were complications of heart procedures. His family didn't say where he died; he had lived in suburban Cincinnati.

He was "a reluctant American hero who always believed he was just doing his job," his family said in a statement.

The moonwalk marked America's victory in the Cold War space race that began Oct. 4, 1957, with the launch of the Soviet Union's Sputnik 1, a 184-pound satellite that sent shock waves around the world. The accomplishment fulfilled a commitment President John F. Kennedy made for the nation to put a man on the moon before the end of 1960s.

Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin spent nearly three hours walking on the lunar surface, collecting samples, conducting experiments and taking photographs.

"The sights were simply magnificent, beyond any visual experience that I had ever been exposed to," Armstrong once said.

In those first few moments on the moon, Armstrong stopped in what he called "a tender moment" and left a patch to commemorate NASA astronauts and Soviet cosmonauts who had died in action.

Although he had been a Navy fighter pilot, a test pilot for NASA's forerunner and an astronaut, the modest Armstrong never allowed himself to be caught up in the celebrity and glamour of the space program.

"I am, and ever will be, a white socks, pocket protector, nerdy engineer," he said in 2000 in one of his rare public appearances. "And I take a substantial amount of pride in the accomplishments of my profession."

Rice University historian Douglas Brinkley, who interviewed Armstrong for NASA's oral history project, said Armstrong fit every requirement the space agency needed for the first man to walk on moon, especially because of his engineering skills and the way he handled celebrity by shunning it.

?????????"I think his genius was in his reclusiveness," said Brinkley. "He was the ultimate hero in an era of corruptible men."

Fellow Ohioan and astronaut John Glenn, one of Armstrong's closest friends, recalled Saturday how Armstrong was on low fuel when he finally brought the lunar module Eagle down on the Sea of Tranquility.

"That showed a dedication to what he was doing that was admirable," Glenn said.

A man who kept away from cameras, Armstrong went public in 2010 with his concerns about President Barack Obama's space policy that shifted attention away from a return to the moon and emphasized private companies developing spaceships. He testified before Congress, and in an email to The Associated Press, Armstrong said he had "substantial reservations."

Along with more than two dozen Apollo-era veterans, he signed a letter calling the plan a "misguided proposal that forces NASA out of human space operations for the foreseeable future."

Armstrong was among the greatest of American heroes, Obama said in a statement.

"When he and his fellow crew members lifted off aboard Apollo 11 in 1969, they carried with them the aspirations of an entire nation. They set out to show the world that the American spirit can see beyond what seems unimaginable ? that with enough drive and ingenuity, anything is possible," Obama said.

Obama's Republican opponent Mitt Romney echoed those sentiments, calling Armstrong an American hero whose passion for space, science and discovery will inspire him for the rest of his life.

"With courage unmeasured and unbounded love for his country, he walked where man had never walked before. The moon will miss its first son of earth," Romney said.

NASA Administrator Charles Bolden recalled Armstrong's grace and humility.

"As long as there are history books, Neil Armstrong will be included in them, remembered for taking humankind's first small step on a world beyond our own," Bolden said in a statement.

Armstrong's modesty and self-effacing manner never faded.

When he appeared in Dayton in 2003 to help celebrate the 100th anniversary of powered flight, he bounded onto a stage before a packed baseball stadium. But he spoke for only a few seconds, did not mention the moon, and quickly ducked out of the spotlight.

He later joined Glenn, by then a senator, to lay wreaths on the graves of Wilbur and Orville Wright. Glenn introduced Armstrong and noted that day was the 34th anniversary of his moonwalk.

"Thank you, John. Thirty-four years?" Armstrong quipped, as if he hadn't given it a thought.

At another joint appearance, Glenn commented: "To this day, he's the one person on earth I'm truly, truly envious of."

Armstrong's moonwalk capped a series of accomplishments that included piloting the X-15 rocket plane and making the first space docking during the Gemini 8 mission, which included a successful emergency splashdown.

In the years afterward, Armstrong retreated to the quiet of the classroom and his southwestern Ohio farm. In an Australian interview earlier this year, Armstrong acknowledged that "now and then I miss the excitement about being in the cockpit of an airplane and doing new things."

Glenn, who went through jungle training in Panama with Armstrong as part of the astronaut program, described him as "exceptionally brilliant" with technical matters but "rather retiring, doesn't like to be thrust into the limelight much."

The 1969 landing met an audacious deadline that President Kennedy had set in May 1961, shortly after Alan Shepard became the first American in space with a 15-minute suborbital flight. (Soviet cosmonaut Yuri A. Gagarin had orbited the Earth and beaten the U.S. into space the previous month.)

"I believe this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before the decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to Earth," Kennedy had said. "No single space project in this period will be more impressive to mankind, or more important to the long-range exploration of space; and none will be so difficult or expensive to accomplish."

The end-of-decade goal was met with more than five months to spare. "Houston: Tranquility Base here," Armstrong radioed after the spacecraft settled onto the moon. "The Eagle has landed."

"Roger, Tranquility," Apollo astronaut Charles Duke radioed back from Mission Control. "We copy you on the ground. You've got a bunch of guys about to turn blue. We're breathing again. Thanks a lot."

The third astronaut on the mission, Michael Collins, circled the moon in the mother ship Columbia 60 miles overhead while Armstrong and Aldrin went to the moon's surface.

"He was the best, and I will miss him terribly," Collins said through NASA.

In all, 12 American astronauts walked on the moon before the last moon mission in 1972.

For Americans, reaching the moon provided uplift and respite from the Vietnam War, from strife in the Middle East, from the startling news just a few days earlier that a young woman had drowned in a car driven off a wooden bridge on Chappaquiddick Island by Sen. Edward Kennedy. The landing occurred as organizers were gearing up for Woodstock, the legendary three-day rock festival on a farm in the Catskills of New York.

Armstrong was born Aug. 5, 1930, on a farm near Wapakoneta in western Ohio. He took his first airplane ride at age 6 and developed a fascination with aviation that prompted him to build model airplanes and conduct experiments in a homemade wind tunnel.

As a boy, he worked at a pharmacy and took flying lessons. He was licensed to fly at 16, before he got his driver's license.

Armstrong enrolled in Purdue University to study aeronautical engineering but was called to duty with the U.S. Navy in 1949 and flew 78 combat missions in Korea.

After the war, Armstrong finished his degree from Purdue and later earned a master's degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Southern California. He became a test pilot with what evolved into the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, flying more than 200 kinds of aircraft from gliders to jets.

Armstrong was accepted into NASA's second astronaut class in 1962 ? the first, including Glenn, was chosen in 1959. He commanded the Gemini 8 mission in 1966, bringing back the capsule back in an emergency landing in the Pacific Ocean when a wildly firing thruster kicked it out of orbit.

Aldrin said he and Armstrong were not prone to free exchanges of sentiment.

"But there was that moment on the moon, a brief moment, in which we sort of looked at each other and slapped each other on the shoulder ... and said, 'We made it. Good show,' or something like that," Aldrin said.

An estimated 600 million people ? a fifth of the world's population ? watched and listened to the landing, the largest audience for any single event in history.

Parents huddled with their children in front of the family television, mesmerized by what they were witnessing. Farmers abandoned their nightly milking duties, and motorists pulled off the highway and checked into motels just to see the moonwalk.

Television-less campers in California ran to their cars to catch the word on the radio. Boy Scouts at a camp in Michigan watched on a generator-powered television supplied by a parent.

Afterward, people walked out of their homes and gazed at the moon, in awe of what they had just seen. Others peeked through telescopes in hopes of spotting the astronauts.

In Wapakoneta, media and souvenir frenzy was swirling around the home of Armstrong's parents.

"You couldn't see the house for the news media," recalled John Zwez, former manager of the Neil Armstrong Air and Space Museum. "People were pulling grass out of their front yard."

Armstrong, Aldrin and Collins were given ticker tape parades in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles and later made a 22-nation world tour. A homecoming in Wapakoneta drew 50,000 people to the city of 9,000.

In 1970, Armstrong was appointed deputy associate administrator for aeronautics at NASA but left the following year to teach aerospace engineering at the University of Cincinnati.

He remained there until 1979 and during that time bought a 310-acre farm near Lebanon, where he raised cattle and corn. He stayed out of public view, accepting few requests for interviews or speeches.

In 2000, when he agreed to announce the top 20 engineering achievements of the 20th Century as voted by the National Academy of Engineering, Armstrong mentioned one disappointment relating to his moonwalk.

"I can honestly say ? and it's a big surprise to me ? that I have never had a dream about being on the moon," he said.

From 1982 to 1992, Armstrong was chairman of Charlottesville, Va.-based Computing Technologies for Aviation Inc., a company that supplies computer information management systems for business aircraft.

He then became chairman of AIL Systems Inc., an electronic systems company in Deer Park, N.Y.

Armstrong married Carol Knight in 1999, and the couple lived in Indian Hill, a Cincinnati suburb. He had two adult sons from a previous marriage.

Armstrong's is the second death in a month of one of NASA's most visible, history-making astronauts. Sally Ride, the first American woman in space, died of pancreatic cancer on July 23 at age 61.

Just prior to the 50th anniversary of Glenn's orbital flight this past February, Armstrong offered high praise to the elder astronaut. Noted Armstrong in an email: "I am hoping I will be 'in his shoes' and have as much success in longevity as he has demonstrated." Glenn is 91.

At the Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles on Saturday, visitors held a minute of silence for Armstrong.

For anyone else who wanted to remember him, his family's statement made a simple request:

"Honor his example of service, accomplishment and modesty, and the next time you walk outside on a clear night and see the moon smiling down at you, think of Neil Armstrong and give him a wink."

Chattanooga Real Estate Market ? Builder Confidence Up ...

Fox News reports that the August home builder confidence index is up.? Builders are feeling better about building new homes.? The inventory of new homes is going down, so the demand for new homes is up.

I just sold a great new home built by Choo Choo Homes in Ooltewah, TN, a week ago.? They have been building homes for 26 years, and they do a good job of it.??John Stutz, of Choo Choo Homes,?told me that the banks are letting them build a very small number of homes at a time compared to the post-2008 lending market.? This is a builder with a long track record, but the banks are?still being overly cautious with him.? Even?Jay Bell, the 2nd generation of Bell Construction in Chattanooga, TN,?told me that the banks would only let him build 1 house at a time per subdivision when the market was at its lowest point 2 years ago.? Overly strict lending is keeping builders from building more new homes at the moment, but the confidence to?build new homes?is there.

Greinke dominates as Angels edge Tigers

By LARRY LAGE

DETROIT (AP) - For a change, Zack Greinke pitched like the player the Los Angeles Angels were hoping to get when they traded for him.

Greinke gave up one run and Howie Kendrick broke a scoreless tie with a two-run double in the sixth, lifting the Angels to a 2-1 win over the Detroit Tigers on Friday night.

"That's the kind of game we need him to give us when he gets the ball," Los Angeles manager Mike Scioscia said.

Miguel Cabrera's two-out solo homer in the eighth chased Greinke. Scott Downs got the Angels out of the inning by getting Prince Fielder to ground out and retired Brennan Boesch to lead off the ninth. Garrett Richards struck out Delmon Young and Jhonny Peralta for the final two outs to earn his first career save.

Greinke (2-2) gave up five hits and two walks while striking out five over 7 2-3 innings. He was thankful that his outfielders had room to catch some deep fly balls in spacious Comerica Park.

"If we were playing in a smaller ballpark, it would have been a six, seven run game," Greinke said.

Rick Porcello (9-9) allowed two runs and seven hits over six innings. He allowed a walk and struck out six.

Detroit manager Jim Leyland was told by the team's medical staff that Cabrera was healthy enough to be a designated hitter, a day after he was taken out of a game with a sore right ankle.

Cabrera, playing with a heavily taped right ankle, said before the series opener against the Angels that he hoped to be back at third base on Saturday night.

Leyland didn't sound as if that was likely following the loss.

"I'm concerned about it after watching tonight," Leyland said. "He looked good at the plate, but moving around, certainly you would have to say there's some questions."

Greinke retired 11 straight before Cabrera hit a two-out double in the sixth. He stranded Cabrera by striking out Fielder looking and arguing about the called strike.

"He was hitting his spots," Fielder said before bristling about the possibly pivotal called strike.

Boesch led off the seventh with a single and Alex Avila drew a two-out walk before Greinke struck out pinch-hitter Andy Dirks.

Greinke lasted more than seven innings for the first time since pitching a shutout for Milwaukee on June 22. He was an out away from potentially pitching in the ninth when Cabrera hit his 32nd homer to pull Detroit within a run.

The Angels have won four straight for the first time in two months. Detroit had won three straight and six of eight.

The Angels had high hopes for Greinke when they acquired the 2009 AL Cy Young award winner nearly a month ago from the Brewers. He won on the road for the first time since June 27, when he was with Milwaukee, after giving up at least four earned runs in four straight starts for the first time in his nine-year career.

"For a while, I just pitched bad," Greinke said.

Fielder wasn't surprised to see his former Brewers teammate bounce back.

"When he's on the mound, he's dangerous," Fielder said.

Greinke gave up a hit and allowed a walk in the first inning before hustling to catch Boesch's popup in foul territory near Detroit's dugout.

After Ramon Santiago hit a leadoff single in the third, the Tigers couldn't get a runner on base until there were two outs in the sixth when Cabrera lumbered to second on his heavily taped right ankle.

Porcello pitched well, but paid the price for throwing a chest-high, 82-mph pitch when he had Kendrick down 0-2 in the sixth inning.

"He just left one up over the plate," Kendrick said. "I saw it and hit it."

Kendrick drove the ball into the left-center gap to bring Maicer Izturis scored and Mark Trumbo home after Torii Hunter extended the inning by a hard slide into second base that led to Omar Infante making a wide throw on a potential double play in what Scioscia called the key play of game.

"Just hustled down there and tried to break up the double play and that's what I did," Hunter said. "I was a told by a pretty good player when I was young - Kirby Puckett - to always do something that helps the team win."

NOTES: Cabrera was back in the lineup as a DH, a day after leaving a game with an injured right ankle, and hopes to be at 3B on Saturday. ... Angels 1B Albert Pujols has missed two straight games with an injured right calf and is aiming to play Saturday. ... Detroit's Brayan Villarreal and Octavio Dotel pitched three innings of scoreless relief. ... The Angels' last four-game winning streak was June 24-28. ... Greinke is 8-4 at Comerica Park, where he has won more games than any other place that hasn't been one of his home ballparks. ... Detroit optioned RHP Luke Putkonen to Triple-A Toledo and recalled LHP Drew Smyly to start Saturday's game. ... Izturis, who matched a season high with three hits, stole his career-high 15th base.

ASUNCION, Paraguay (AP) ? Imagine being stuck in a cage for two months while going through customs. That's the border limbo 16 tigers and lions have faced in Paraguay because Argentine officials refuse to approve their paperwork for re-entry.

The nine Bengal tigers and seven African lions belong to an Argentine circus that performs in the Paraguayan capital each August. Their owner, Oswal Wasconi, brought them back for this year's circus only to learn that a new law in Paraguay bans live animal acts at circuses.

With no chance of performing, Wasconi tried to ship his big cats back to Argentina. But then they got stuck at the border.

Estela Gomez, director of Paraguay's wildlife agency, said the animals all have good-health certificates, but their entry to Argentina was blocked by officials demanding more information about the protected species.

Aides to Argentina's quarantine office director, Raul Castelli, said he was in a meeting and could not explain the holdup.

After inquiries from The Associated Press on Friday about the cats' plight, Gomez said her ministry decided to move the big cats two by two to the Asuncion zoo, "so that they can live in some comfort and not in a strange area."

Furthermore, she said that "Wasconi has promised to provide them with food and liquid because these animals are physically quite large."

"In the next few days we will continue investigating the true reasons why the Argentine authorities aren't authorizing their return," she said. "I can't anticipate whether these beasts will remain forever in Paraguay or eventually go to Argentina."
